I found this on other forums on how to install Win XP when you have Ubuntu installed.

    1. Start your computer and when Ubuntu is up and running insert your Windows CD.
Then, restart your computer and AS SOON AS you see the Dell screen press F12. That is a key on the upper right of your keyboard.

    2. The Boot Device Menu appears, listing all available boot devices. Each device has a number next to it.
At the bottom of the menu, enter the number of the CD device. It might say "CD/DVD" or something like that. Press Enter.

    3. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD.

    4. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup. At the next screen press F8.

    5. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP. It may get confusing at this point but what you want to do is scroll down using the arrow key to the partition with the largest number of megabytes, or MB (that's going to be what's called your primary drive) and press Enter, then follow the instructions to format the drive.

    6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Windows XP Setup.

Now heres the problem I have with my netbook is that step (4) doesn't work since it comes as a error blue screen. Basicly I have already set it so it will boot as CDROM then HDD but right after everthing loads and gets to the last screen where you would press enter to install Win XP it shows blue screen and doesn't work so I can't install XP. I don't know if Ubuntu has some partition that makes it so you can't install Windows systems but normaly I should be able to delete the partition that Ubuntu is on and create a new one so I can install XP on that one.

I have also tried to install XP from the desktop while Ubuntu is running but it says no vaild partition was found. So basicly I wasn't able to install it that way eather. I really need help so I can load XP back on the is netbook. That's the main reason why I had to learn how to use Ubuntu since I can't find a way to load back XP. I do have the retail version of XP Home.

What was funny is that even on my Sony notebook it does the same thing. But if I install Win 7 Home then it works fine and I can delete the partition and create new one and install Win 7. But I don't know if I had Win 7 32 bit if it would work on my netbook but it might not as well since it's a different PC. Basicly my netbook came with XP Home and has the CD key so if I install XP I can use the key. But I really need help on trying to install XP back.

    Thank you very much

Depending on the age of your netbook, the disk controller is likely in a mode XP doesn't understand (since XP is going on 12 years old). You may want to check your BIOS for a legacy controller mode of some sort. Every BIOS words it differently.

The netbook was made around 2010 so it isn't that old. I looked it up on the net. This was a budget netbook. I have tried to deleted the partition using Gparted software when I have Ubuntu running but it said I can't. I think it's because I have Ubuntu running and it has to not be running to delete it. I forgot to say that I did use that software. Btw since I replaced the OS the recovery partition is gone of cource so I have to use my retail version of Win XP Home that I have. But I haven't tried using SystemRescureCD yet. I don't know how that program works yet.

Isn't the SystemRescureCD for systems that still have a recovery partition? Since mine doesn't have one anymore since it got deleted when I replaced the OS to Ubuntu. Or how do I delete the partition that Ubuntu is using now so I can make one for Win XP? Since I know that while I am using the OS I can't delete the current one.

Maybe I didn't explain my questions right or so since it looks like over 100 people has viewed but doesn't know. But eatherway maybe I used the GParted software wrong and that's why I wasn't able to delete the main one so I can create one for Windows. Basicly when I tried to load Win XP and try to run setup being on the desktop it says no vaild partition found so I thought maybe I can create a new one but I wasn't really able to replace the main one that Ubuntu was using. Maybe someone can tell me step by step on how to use GParted so I can delete the main partition. I don't know if I can run this program and delete while in desktop.

go to your bios. check the SATA operation. make sure it's on "ATA" and not "AHCI". it should boot now.

The only options I have is AHCI or IDE there is no ATA for somereason. I tried doing IDE but that didn't work also it showed the same blue error screen right before the setup starts where you press enter. I basicly tried booting from CD when the computer boots since normaly I do that when I install Win XP or so. But I don't know if I have to install XP when running the Ubuntu desktop and then run the XP CD setup.

Also if I boot up using IDE then Ubuntu doesn't load all the way. I don't know if I had to reinstall Ubuntu using IDE to make it work or not but all I can say is that IDE doesn't work for loading the Win XP CD and starting up setup before the computer boots all the way. Basicly still same thing happens. I wonder if anyone had this same problem since I assume they did with a simlar netbook like what I have.

    I have a Gateway LT2016U.

Your problem is you're trying to install an OS from 2001 along with an OS from 2013. They think too different. XP doesn't understand your disk controller, this is very likely and IDE mode will get around it. This may break Ubuntu, which is unfortunate, and the fix for that is to either do some hack to correct it (telling Ubuntu the disk controller changed) or reinstall Ubuntu.

Well I wanted to wipe everything and install XP only. I didn't really want to have two system together. But I can't seem to install XP itself and replace Ubuntu. Even when I set ti IDE and boot up from CD and run the setup same error blue screen message comes up and basicly I have to restart the system. I have also tried to install XP while in Ubuntu desktop but a diiferent message shows that saying there is no valid partition so basicly setup had to close.

You are correct, with ubuntu running, it probably wont let you delete the partition.
Also I think your blue screen problem is that your installing XP on a newer computer with SATA and XP does not come with SATA drivers included on install.
you will need to supply XP with the sata drivers during install, which I think it wants on a cd or floppy. Your best option is to use Nlite to make a new XP install cd and roll in your drivers and all the windows updates and service packs, because updating a netbook from XP sp1 to current windows update status will take like 10 hours. Nlite is easy to use and cuts your update time way down.

Here is what I would do:

    1. Get a spare flash drive, and with ubuntu running, run the usb-creator program from ubuntu's menu to create a ubuntu flash drive. If its not there, you can get it in the sofware manager, or just create a ubuntu flash drive using unetbootin. alternatively you can use a smaller distro like Gparted live, and make a flash drive with that. what you want is any linux distro on a flash drive, so you can boot it and run gparted.

    2. Now that your booted from your flash drive, run gparted and delete the partitions. I think you said in your other thread, you removed windows and are now only running ubuntu. If that is correct and you don't have any windows partitions, just delete all partitions and make one big new one formatted as NTFS.

    3. On another computer install Nlite. This will allow you to copy your XP cd (or .iso), and patch it with updates/service packs, but more importantly the netbook SATA drivers you need to install xp. Nlite will then create a new cd (or .iso), which you can then use to install XP.

note: 1&2 are optional because the XP install should let you manually delete all partitions and create a new one.

you also might want to google 'xp sata install'. It's a pretty common problem.

XP setup doesn't see a valid partition because Ubuntu uses EXT 3/4 file system. It won't recognize it.

Hopefully this guide will get you going, dustin.

Actually knowing what that error screen exactly says would be useful to us :) If it stays visible, take your time and type it here (at least the 0x0000000 error codes, not the things explaining "this is an error screen"). If you are feeling lazy, take a picture of the screen and post it here.

For some reason I can't post any replys on any topics so I had to make a new one. I did try to clear all of the history and cookies but that didn't help. But anyways I can't thank you guys enough since I got my netbook to load Win XP Home. I basicly used that NLite software and just loaded SP2 and made a new disk and now it installed XP. I had to change to IDE btw since if it was AHCI it would give same error blue screen message. If I have any other problems I will let you know. Thank you :)

Btw even on this topic it shows as grey and I can't post replys.

I have very similar issue, I have a Gateway NV75S05u w/ win 7 and want to go back to xp pro. Have new hdd same model WD5000BPVT, I have partitioned it and formatted it NTFS, the drive works as 2nd drive I have copied files to it and can read them. I remove the win 7 hdd put new formatted hdd in boot from cd load xp pro and when it comes to end of load and goes to access hdd I get the blue screen ox7b,oxf8d2524. (Which I believe means it can't see the boot device.
My question has probably already been answered here, too new controller for old OS. Any tricks?
