I am making a set of recovery discs. (I have Vista Home Premium)

On the first try, it failed. Second time, success. I recently learned why it failed: HP does not support DVD-R for recovery discs.

So, the first recovery DVD was a success. The second one kept failing, so I run out and grab a 3pack of DVD+R.

Now, if I do have to recovery my system via these discs, will it work if one is on DVD-R, and the other DVD+R?

If HP doesn't support DVD-R for recovery discs, then you need to stick with DVD+R for all recovery discs.

It won't let me start over with Disc 1.

Well, since there's no way to go back, you'll have to hope for the best. Hopefully when SP1 is released, Vista users will be able to make more than one set of recovery discs.

Yes, they work 1+r and 1-r, I got a dv9310 few months ago, I made a set of recovery disks using 1+ and 1- and I tried them, they worked.
