Before I shell out almost $500 for a copy of MS Office I need to know if I can install the copy of Office on each of the 4 PCs (2 desktops + 2 notebooks) in my home. I asked 3 employees at Best Buy and got 1 yes, 1 no and 1 I'm not sure. I checked the MS website and couldn't find a definitive answer.

Hopefully someone in the forum will know the answer. Thanks in advance for your help.

1 license, 1 machine. If you have a student, any grade, you can get the 'Student Edition' for ~ $120 and install it on up to three machines. No Visio or Access with student edition, the other progs are identical.

    First PC = Vic-20, 8" 128KB Home-Brew Floppy Drive ... Current Rig = eMachines m6805 ... Quantum Leap?

Right, unless you buy extra licenses, then it's a 1 to 1. $500 is way high though, you should be able to do much better.

    yellowhouse,

Actually, you can load M$ Office on 1 desktop and 1 laptop. I recently did this and upon activation I was questioned by MS. The rep told me 2 machines is fine. At least a desktop and laptop!

Of course, since office has to be activated, he should just start instlling on systems and see how far he gets as it will only let him activate what he's allowed too. For 2 desktops and 2 notebooks he will need to buy 2 licenses.

I know where your coming from, like I have Photoshop installed on both my desktop and notebook as per the user agreement. Sometimes my 10 year old son plays/learns photoshop on my desktop, so sometimes there are two different users. What I mean is like in a bussiness kind of environment, 1 license of office does not mean you can put it on one employee's desktop machine and on another employee's notebook.

Try Open Office. It is very much like MS office and no license issues.

I have a quick question regarding MS then. So exactly how many people would MS let used the software before they completely stop the activation process. I used it on my computer and then I let my uncle and my friend borrow it for their computer. My friend went through and I think the same with my uncle. However, now when I try installing it for my laptop, it said that I already used up all my activation and that i have like 40 days or so left to use MS Office. I also was wondering what would happen to the program after the 40 days, would they completely eliminate all the features on MS words and such other programs, or completely shut it down? Thanx in advance.

They let you install and activate on two computers only. Since you have it activated on one of your PCs already it only gets one more, so either your uncle or friend has activated also, but not both of them. If you want to use it on both of your computers, then you have to tell your uncle and your friend to uninstall theirs, then you can activate your 2nd install for your notebook. When you 1st install they give you 50 days I believe to activate, what will happen when the time runs out is that none of the Office programs(access, excel, word, powerpoint, outlook) will run at all until you activate. So to answer your question, only 2 activations are allowed and on those installs that are not activated you have 50 days to use the software before it is completely shutdown. Of course windows will still run, but none of the office programs will start up any longer.

Why don't u just install the network version of MSoffice, where the original copy will be on the server and all the other pc will load from the server?

All the recent versions of MSoffice require activation except for the purchase of the volume /corporate license. This can save a large corporation a lot of money, but even when buying the volume license for 500-1000 computers it still costs serval hundred dollars per computer. Microsoft does not have a version of office with unlimited number of PCs it can be installed on; for the large corporations there is not an activation or even a serial number in many cases, but microsoft has the right to and does audit corporate licensees to make sure they have not installed on more PCs than they have paid for.
