Looking for ~60 GB of cloud storage

Hey people,

I've been thinking about backing up my files and photos in the cloud so as to protect my data from a house fire, burglars, floods and aliens (of the saucer kind). I have about 40-60 GB of files depending on what is crucial and what is not.

What kind of low-cost alternatives do I have?

Dropbox is a bit steep at $8.25 per month and I don't need a terabyte, so I'd mostly be paying for nothing. Free accounts are limited to 2 GB. My previous DP account was hacked so I'm not particularly keen on DP anymore anyway.

Myself I don't like them off site storage. I have 2 fully rugged water proof external drives that I keep all my important doc's in it like wills, inventory of of everything in my house. I keep them in a small water and fire proof safe. Every other month I update these files. Also no burglars is going to find my safe. Total cost about $200.00

Amazon Glacier cloud storage website doesn't tell you how much they charge. You have to sign up and give personal data in order to see the prices.
And what's with that 'Glacier' term. Isn't that a term for slow? Dumb choice of words.

But the original poster should do both as suggested above, if he has sensitive data that he wants to preserve. Use the cloud and use external disk drives. The cloud goes out when they are hacked and your drives don't last forever.

 

Did you even look at the link? It CLEARLY states $0.007/GB/month with no minimum. No signup required.

And glacier is specifically designed for bulk backup rather than speed/throughput, making it a very cost effective solution. Way to call something dumb without spending ~30 seconds to research it.

To address your last concern, I would suggest OP encrypt and then upload the files.

Pricing info is given but it's somewhat elusive. From what I gather...

- 1 GB per month costs between $0,007 and $0,013 depending on storage location.
- Upload and Retrieve requests are priced from $0.05 per 1,000 requests.
- Deleting archives is free if data is over three months old. Otherwise fees apply.
- Up to 5% of monthly average storage can be retrieved for free. So if I have 60 GB, 3 GB per month can be retrieved for free
- Retrieval of over 5% per month costs a lot and if you also need it fast it costs BIG DOLLAH.

Yeah that's what I intend to do, I've used Veracrypt to make archives but not really needed it for anything until now.

I also stumbled upon Google's Nearline, which is somewhat similar to Glacier. Looking into that now.

Google's Nearline costs $0.01 per GB per month and retrieving is the same. They claim retrievals can be commenced in mere seconds but give no indication as to the retrieval speed.

I might be inclined to give Nearline a try since the pricing is way simpler. Of course Google wants my phone number, which means I'll have to go and fetch a prepaid just for this purpose.

Funnily enough, Glacier will never let you retrieve your whole archive for free even tho they claim that 5% per month is without charge. If you have a 100 GB, and you try to retrieve 5% per month, it's 100*0.95, 95*0.95, 90.25*0.95, 85.7375*0.95 and so on. You'll never reach zero.

 

Weird, I guess they're literally banking on you storing more than you need; thanks for the tip. I recall we looked into Glacier at work for something and ended up abandoning the idea long before we looked for other similar offerings, so it's good to know about Nearline.
