Looking for an HDD sector repair and transferer

Hey I'm looking around for some hard drive recovery software that does what HDD Regenerator does but it will copy each sector at the same time.

Essentially I have a drive that's about to die completely and has huge amounts of bad sectors that come back as soon as you access that sector twice.

So basically has anyone heard of some software that recovers bad magnetic sectors and at the same time copies em.



btw there's 32 megs of bad clusters on this drive when i do a chkdsk xD, but its pretty much useless after that because it needs to be repaired again.

 

Not certain what you mean by copy, do you mean to another hdd? , SpinRight is the only other hdd bad sector recovery software similar to hdd regenerator but better, thought it is not free, thought it will not copy data to another hdd.

Unless you are trying to recover data, do yourself a favour and throw the drive in the trash.

I'll second SpinRite. I've used it to recover data from a few dying drives. You will need to let it run overnight to process an entire drive.

It is an extremely small file -- you can keep a copy saved on your webmail account and then access it anywhere.

As Tinderbox noted, though it's not free -- $89 is quite reasonable.

I checked a friends notebook the hdd had 4 bad sectors SpinRight fixed 2 , then i ran it again and it fixed another one , leaving 1 permanent faulty, so more than one pass might be necessary.

But once a hdd starts to show bad sectors , you should get your data off and rma or dump the drive.

first run had so many but It's usally like 150 each run. I ended up running it and used a live linux disk partition copier ended up getting 60 bad sectors, so Its not a total waste and yes that hdd is getting trashed, but I needed to get some data off of it first.

 

Have you tried the frozen drive trick? Yes I am dead serious about this. A last resort try at recovering data can be made by putting the drive into a zip lock bag, sucking all the air out of the bag and sealing it. Then put the drive in a freezer for 24 hours. Prepare your work area before you pull the drive out of the freezer so as to minimize warming the drive up before you begin. Pull the drive out of the freezer wire it up and immediately stat pulling the data off.

This method has proven time and again to be a possible remedy for folks. It does not always work of course, but it is worth a try.

Frozen drives are typically only for when you're getting a seized drive that's no longer spinning, not for sector errors.

 

Yeah I got what I needed off of it, I will prob do the frozen bag on another 1 though.
