Ever since I was forced to reformat/reinstall Vista, I have been having weird issues. Lately, at random times maybe once every 4 hours my machine will slow to a crawl, then become unresponsive, causing a random program to fog or haze over and lock out. Ctrl+Alt+Del will not pop up and after maybe 3-4 minutes the machine will become responsive again. However the latest time it did this, I was greeted with a black screen with a dialog window that read "Failure Security Options - Logon process has failed to create security options dialog". I have never seen this before and I am a little worried. I am going to do a full sweep with AVG (are there any other free anti=virus programs you would recommend?) and see what the results are. Anyone know the cause of this?

I am also having a problem installing Vista x64 Sp2, it gives me a invalid data error (0x800700d), and running the System Update Readiness Tool has not fixed the problem. I have tried googling, but I haven't progressed very far with either problems and I was asking if any of you have any knowledge or experience in these matters?

    Thanks!

    You didn't mention your OS

Have seen this problem several times in the past. Always in XP. While I have read of several fixes over the years, in the two or three times I have seen it the problem was always a program starting from the winlogon key in the hkey local machine hive of the registry.

It seems to me that one of these was spyware related, but the others were actual legitimate antivirus programs or spyware programs...pretty sure one of them WAS avg that caused the problem.

The FIRST thing I would do is log into safe mode where the error does not occur (or did not occur in my cases) and run a restore point back to a time where the error did not occur. I then would remove all antivirus and anti-malware programs in add/remove, and then run a removal tool if available (norton, mcafee and and AVG all provide removal tools to remove additional settings left behind by the removal process). I would disable Windows Defender if I had it installed.

I would then install malwarebytes, do a scan, install spybot, and do a scan, and finally avira, and do a scan.

    The run windows updates.
