    Hi there!
This post is about letting you laptop users know about a software solution that may come handy in many situations. I just want to share it with you...

    LAPTOP ALARM
    http://www.syfer.nl

For many times I've been in situations where I feel unconfortable to go to the bathroom or go for a snack and leave my laptop all "alone" with duzens of persons he doens't "know"!
This LaptopAlarm software gives me a little bit more confidence when leaving my laptop with those unknown persons by triggering a very loud alarm when someone approaches the laptop! OK, not when they come closer to the laptop, but on some possible theft situations like the ones below:

Laptop Alarm will emit a LOUD ALARM on:
    1. A/C Power Removal
    2. Mouse Removal
    3. Mouse Movement
    4. Shutdown / Suspend

Offcourse this software isn't 100% effective on all kinds of persons, but it might scare 75% of them...

Lets take a look at some of it's features and advices on it's usage:
    - choose wich events make the alarm sound
    - configured mouse movement detection sensibility
    - password protection for shutting down the alarm (when it triggers ofcourse)
    - never use a password you can forget (I believe there's no way to shut it down otherwise)
    - always put laptop's volume to the max before running LaptopAlarm
    - never use it with headphones, otherwise it wont scare a fly
    - don't overtrust LaptopAlarm's effectiveness

You can download LaptopAlarm for free from the website above!
There are two versions of this software available on the website:
LaptopAlarm 2.0beta - with the extra feature of "SMS warnings" (wich I never used)
LaptopAlarm 1.21 - without the "SMS warnings"

Apart from the extra "SMS warnings" feature, I can't find any difference between 2.0beta and 1.21, but I tend to use the latest beta one cause it works the same and there could be some improvements I don't notice!

    So that's it!
I hope this software comes to be as handy for you as it is for me!
    Let me know your opinion...
    Cumps!

I don't think that program sounds good at all. First off, it's INCREDIBLY easy to get past that software. For instance, you could most likely hard shutdown the computer or as you pointed out turn off the sound. Next, you're probably not connected into an outlet, so you're using the mouse movement alarm. That alarm is VERY annoying. Someone taps the table your laptop is on, there goes the alarm. I know I don't like it when car alarms go off, how much do you think people around you will like it if your laptop alarm goes off. I'd be worried about "accidental" coffee spills at that point.

A much better program would be LoJack for Laptops. That program actually tracks where your laptop is in case of theft. Wow, your laptop alarm went off during an actual theft. Now go run and get it before the thief runs away. Oh by the way, have fun confronting the thief. If someone really wanted to steal your laptop, an alarm won't help much. This is why tracking software is better. The great thing is that most of the time, 3/4 I believe, LoJack actually gets your laptop back.

Ugh. Sorry for sounding like an infomerical, but LoJack is simply the best software option for securing your laptop. However, the almost full proof way of protecting your laptop is, get this, wait for it, NOT LEAVING IT ALONE. You probably spent a substantial amount of money on your laptop and now you're leaving it alone, in a public area?

Plz don't ever leave your lappy alone in public. Unless someone you trust is watching it. A laptop is such a tempting target for thieves. I don't use any special software. I just keep it close to me.

Otherwise you can always try bolting it down :D

Hmm..I am still confuse how LoJack works. If the thief get rid of the current hard drive and use another one, connect the current HDD from stolen laptop into USB enclosure, does LoJack still work? :)
Just my curious, thanks for any enlightenment.

LoJack just creeps me out. It even has the option of remotely formatting your HDD. It permanent presence just creeps me out. I dount users can't even get fully rid of it if they want to.
If you're just careful with your laptop it won't get stolen. Don't leave it out in public, don't leave it in plain view in your car etc. etc.. Kensington locks work well if you have them.

Hey guys, don't get me wrong, I don't rely on LaptopAlarm for my laptop's security and just leave it everywhere alone!
There are only a few situations where I am confortable on leaving it with LaptopAlarm! Like when I'm in my university's library or studying rooms! Those places have a lot of people that would "help" in case the alarm is triggered!
And even in those places, I don't feel 100% confortable by leaving my precious laptop!
This LaptopAlarm software only gives you like 25% more confidence and that's it!
I just wanted to share with you something that I found interesting...

Yeah, I've seen that app before, but it didn't look like anything I would want to use.

it would just annoy the heck out of everyone at the library with all the alarms 'accidentally' going off by unplugging the ac adapter or something like that.
