    Hello everyone

After I successfully recoverd my entire laptop with a minimal HDD of 40 GB (original was 60 GB), I'm very happy to be able to use it again. I recovered the computer using copies of the Recovery DVDs, and everything is working great.

Original thread about my laptop can be found here:

Except one bugged update somehow. This old laptop has Windows XP Professional and I installed SP3 with no problems. I managed to install every update until I get to this: KB898461 , wich is giving me a headache. The Windows Update works on it, starts the instalation, and then it stops with "this update was not installed".

I searched the internet for this, and all I can find is very VERY old threads and pages with discussions started back in 2005 or even earlier. When going through Windows Update logs in the update site, I can read this error: 0x8007F01E. Even searching for both the error and the KB update number, the only solutions I can find are worthless. I tried the trick in the SoftwareDistribution folder after stopping update service, and also registering some DLLs (success with all of them, no error whatsoever), but still the update refuses to be installed.

Is this anyway related to the end of Windows XP support? I think not, because I even found people with the same error with the same download failed on Windows 7. And I would like to keep my original Windows because it has a legal license; thus, this old machine will not work so well in newer Windows (will be slower and some devices lack propper drivers and support - I tried it before I managed to install the current Windows version).

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

I'd just forget about the update if it doesn't effect XP and it runs ok.
