If Vista is supported I think Windows 7 should work too. Windows 7 tends to run better on older machines.

You don't have to worry, it will work.
I have a nx9420 and the only difference between mine and yours is display size and graphics.
I've been using W7 since launch, no issues at all.
After you've installed, go to windows update and install the audio driver, that's the only thing I can remember that doesn't work from start, maybe you need the latest graphics drvier too.

However, you should wait until Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 is released, which is about a month from now.
You're less likely to get into trouble by installing this, compared to installing a SP separately.

i had a HP Compaq TC4400 (stolen), and still have a NC6400, which are not officially supported by Windows 7. all the Vista drivers worked fine on both machines, so i think your NC6300 will be fine as well.

Isn't it better to stick with XP ?

Less load on the laptop ? Better battery life ?

only if you're running on a 1.2 AMD Sempron and 512MB of memory maybe. otherwise if you've got a dual core and 1GB of RAM i would recommend W7 where possible.

I'd say at least 1.5 GB in the long run, or more. DDR2 is so cheap anyway.
Just don't go above 3 GB because the chipset can only handle something like <3.5 GB and it has nothing to do with Windows being 32 or 64-bit, google it.

My HP is over 4 years old now. I've used XP, Vista RTM, Vista SP2 and W7 RTM. Only the Vista RTM made it slow, all the others were fine.
