We are planning on pre ordering W7 but we have an old desktop we want to out it on.

The question I have is will premium be smaller and faster than professional for older computers?

I do not think that it will make any differences if the minimum hardware meets the requirement of W7 in general.

More likely is the availability of drivers that will make or break it.

    cheers ...

I don't think there would be much difference. A lot of folk including myself have been running W7 Ultimate on old machines and that runs pretty well.

The features like backup that only pro has should work while Media Centre seems to be the most 'hardware limited' feature. But then premium is cheaper.
