There is a rumor going around about Microsoft forcing IE 7 out today or tomorrow morning as part of a critical update. Is this true?

The last I heard, IE7 was going to be pushed through as a high priority update through the Automatic Update feature.... but there's supposed to be a mechanism to opt-out of updating to IE7 if you don't want it.

I hadn't heard the date of when this was coming up though (most of this came up back at the end of July).

Well just downloaded the current release of patchs and no IE7 was included. Maybe next time!

I have yet to be informed about any updates to IE 7.
I guess I'll wait and see.

I'm sure you can opt out of it if you want, though I don't see why you would want to. It's light years ahead of IE6 in terms of both security and compatibility. But Microsoft got hit pretty hard with that WGA stuff, and I'm sure people are going to be watching a lot more closely from now on.

Great, now I'm gonna have to peel my parents of the ceiling or something after they punch up IE on their machine and it looks totally different.

"OMGWTFBBQ!!! VIRUSES SPYWARE OH CRAP CRAP!!!! FIX IT!!!!"

"it's the next version of IE"

Haven't installed it myself, but from what I've read at least, it is absolutely worth it if you are currently an IE6 user. Adds some nice functionality, tabbed browsing, etc. I'm personally using Firefox, so IE7 hasn't specifically been of interest to me, but if I used IE6 as my primary browser I would jump on IE7.

What are the main features of IE7 compared to IE6?
I have the IE tab on my Firefox, so I don't even use IE6 that much at the moment.

Pretty good overview of IE7 features here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx

IE7 would be a bigger deal as an ugprade for IE6 users; whether it would be something that would make someone want to switch from Firefox to IE is another question.

I'm using IE7 on Vista, and I like it better than IE6 (if for only the tabbed browsing). The phishing filter is a tad annoying, as it does not always work, but it still is in beta form.

Wow, right around the corner. I like WMP11 except for it switching from MSN Music to Urge as the service, as I have a pretty decent library from the former.

IE7 is a rip off of Firefox. Firefox 2 is a rip of off IE7.

It's hardly a surprise that both browsers would start adopting new and interesting ideas from the other. This kind of thing is a good thing otherwise - MS in particular really needs to have a competing product out there or else they just let it stagnate.
