No one. If you aren't using Word, hopefully use OpenOffice. Works is junk.

Given that it comes free on most computers, works absolutely fine - just without all the bells and whistles, and is completely compatible with Office, I don't see what you're talking about.

If you get works free. Use it, if you don't lke it spend a heap of money getting office 2007, or try open office. Works was only ever designed to be used by home users and as such isn't going to be as good as a full office suite for business type work. It's still usefull in its own right, but it comes down to personal choice.

I've known quite a few people that are happy with using nothing more than Works. Not everyone needs the most powerful Office Suite in the world.

    Alright, here goes.

    I Hate People 4

    1. If you're going to criticize something, come up with a reason. Say something that would seem mildly intelligent to a retarded monkey - here, I'll help you. "Works sucks because it uses proprietary file formats", "Works sucks because the user interface is confusing", "Works sucks because the box it comes in is blue". I mean, think of something - anything at all - to make yourself seem less like an asshat, because amazingly, I can point and laugh too "haha, you're an asshat". And we all know that's true - because I said so.

This is a tech forum. Save your dumbassness for Youtube, pile your worthless comments there where I can click the shiny thumbs down button. Believe it or not, but people actually come here for support when they want to purchase something - next time I have to answer the question "I heard _____ sucks. Is it true?" from your 60 year old grandma, I'm coming for you. Your balls actually. If you have a reason to why something is subpar, then by all means, yell and shout - but at least give me something to refute.

    2. Works is free. It comes free on most consumer level computers, aka "what your Grandma is buying". If you don't like it - regardless of whether you actually have a reason, or if you're just an asshat, or even a combination of the two - then don't use it. This stands with every free program, service, or item. If you know of an alternative (Office, OpenOffice), then you obviously know where to obtain the alternative. Then do it, ain't no one stoppin ya.

Believe it or not, but Granny doesn't need the $149 copy of Office (which at times carries more margin than the computer). She wouldn't know what a cascading style sheet was if it slapped her in the face. But wouldn't it be nice if she could open a Word document on her brand new computer without having to "download" another program? Cause your sorry asshat face ain't gonna walk her through that on the phone.

So tell me, what could honestly bother you so much about a free program?

    3. Don't be an asshat. Number 3 is more general - this goes for everything, not just MS Works, computers or electronics. I wish that I could magically make everyone happy and appreciate the things in life. But hey - we all know that ain't gonna happen. So let's just revel in our human nature, full of misery and contempt, but let's not go out of our way just to be an asshat.

There are enough things in this world that you need to be concerned about. MS Works isn't one of them. As enjoyable as these are to write, let's try to stave off numero cinqo for a while eh?

While I personally do not use Works, I know many people that use it and it "works" just fine for them.

These people only need its' limited functionality and do not need all of the bells and whistles that other programs offer. It is not a "joke" to them.

My mom had a hard time adjusting to Office. So you are right there. She would start screaming at the computer about how to adjust all the margins. And that talking paperclip.

I'm one of those that Works is targeted for. I create very simple spreadsheets and documents. Up until either Works 8.5 or Works 9 I believe you had to convert documents over from Office to Works and vice versa.

Hence I stayed with Office primarily because my vendors and suppliers use Office instead. I'm also hooked on Outlook which is better than anything on Works so i've stayed with Office 2007 instead.

I tried Works 8.5 and Works 9 which came free with my laptops and it's a nice free all in one program. I don't think people should knock it just because of the name. Office and Works are tailored for two separate audiences.

Another nice free program from Microsoft is Accounting Express 2008. It falls right between Quicken Home and Business and Quickbooks Pro. A really nice full functioning program from Microsoft that's free as well.

Works is quite capable - if you can use a spreadsheet you can use the database app, but if you got a full version of Office with MS Access, you'd need to be trained on it before you could use it, and even then it would be too complicated. Who wants to bother with primary keys and stuff when you can use what's basically a modified spreadsheet with sorting and filtering?
Let's all use the more expensive thing because we can.

Regarding free Office programs, I would go OpenOffice instead. It is more modern and feature rich than Works. But if money is no problem, then nothing beats real MS Office.

Access table requires no primary keys or stuff to work, at least not so that it would show to the user. However, those are mandatory for relationships and that (complex data models) is where spreadsheets often fail or change complex to extreamly complex instead. Besides, one could make the Access based program and another use it through the forms. The later wouldn't need to bother with data structures (or even storing places) behind the forms.

I used to use Works and it's a handy program. People who are not as 'advance' as some of you are still use it. It's a simple all in one integrated program. It's like a little brother to the Office Suite. So don't knock something you haven't even tried! There are still simpletons out there.

Is number 4 people who don't know how to count? :D

Works is fine if your computer comes with it. I remember using Microsoft Bob which a lot of people also bash, but it did what it needed to do and it was quite fun for me, but I used it in elementary school. I think MS would benefit by offering Works for free as a download in competition with Open Office.

Knowing that I had a copy of Office 2007 with one install left and further knowing that OpenOffice was not only a free possibility, but one I would def have given my plan to dual boot with Ubuntu, I still opted to take Works on my Vostro 1400.

Why? In part because it would not have effected the cost in the least. I've got a prof who once wrote up some docs in Works and then half the people in my class couldn't read them because none of the Campus computers have Works on them.

Second, it offers basic features, but is more in depth then WordPad, which means it will get me by until I do some heavy downloading or install Office. That means more time playing with my new computer and less time loading in new apps.

Third, well...Lithus covered it. Works may not be the office powerhouse suite that Office is or even that OpenOffice is but it provides an entry level Word Processor and that alone is probably more then worth having it around.

I used Works 8.5 for the past 2 semesters of college and got by, believe it or not. I didn have to use Office at the school every here and there though, for special projects. With that said, going into my junior year, I will be upgrading to Office no doubt about it.
