I mainly use firefox, but I am wondering why my internet explorer takes almost 5 minutes to initiate? OS: 64bit vista.

Try going through your add-ons and disabling/deleting the unnecessary ones. I remember I had a security/fingerprint add-on that caused my IE to take 30 seconds to open.

Spyware/virus infection is a possibility, yes. Another thing you could check is proxy settings. Maybe it's trying to auto-detect your proxy.

    Try this:

    1. Go to Tools > Internet Options > "Connections" tab
    2. Click "LAN Settings", and then uncheck the box that says "Automatically detect my proxy settings".

    Hope this helps.

and if you have 3rd party "tool bars". They really slow it down. Disable them in tools> manage add-ons> enable or disable add-ons.

Disable Pop-Up Blocker, Phishing Filter, delete Browsing History and decrease the disk space allocated for the TIFs.
    Or reinstall IE/Reset IE Settings.

Try Right-Clicking on your Internet Explorer icon on the desktop and selecting the option "Run without Addons" or something along those lines (I don't have my vista machine on me right now.) It will pretty much force a vanilla Internet explorer to run. If you don't see that option on the right click menu, you should be able to see it on the IE icon on the taskbar.

hey guys I just found out that there are 2 versions of IE on my system, 32bit and 64bit. I've been using the 32bit version the whole time and now the 64bit version is working flawlessly. are there any difference between them?

If you're using 64-bit Vista, then stick with 64-bit IE. The 32-bit version is not designed to work well in 64-bit environment.
