I'm having trouble accessing hotmail and Windows Update using Internet Explorer. Neither IE6 nor IE7 works. Javascript doesn't seem to work either.

After submitting the log-in form for hotmail, the page does not load. All I get is a blank page. The status bar says the page has finished loading, but nothing has loaded at all. When I refresh the page, it prompts me for the password again.

Windows update doesn't work either. When I try to load the page in IE, I just get a blank page. Links using Javascript have no effect and I can't submit any kind of form in IE.

Another thing I've found is my Find window is blank too. I've included a link to a screenshot.

    Help would be appreciated.

Are you able to use FF? Is it only Hotmail and Windows Update you're having problems with?

I'm using FF to post this, so yes, it works. Hotmail is fine on FF.

IE doesn't work with Hotmail, Windows Update, or any Javascript links. So far, I haven't encountered any other sites it doesn't work with... but it may be because IE is not my main browser.

I just tried logging into my Yahoo mail, and it said something about "browser settings preventing from automatically redirecting to new url".

And because I haven't used my Yahoo account for so long, it tells me to reactivate my account. haha. Thing is, the "reactivate account" button doesn't work either.

Hope this helps in diagnosing the problem. =/

Try putting ALL your browser settings on default or low settings.

and set your cookies on accept all.

Try using ccleaner or any washer.

Then reset pc and see if explorer works good now.

If it works, put settings to your liking for security.

Yea, something is defiantly wrong. I take it that your using RTM cause of no watermark.

Did you try to restore to earliest restore point?

Beside that, I can say try REG Mechanic to take messed up reg. It's worked alot of times for me as a last resort.

Dude, freaky. Hmmm let me see if I can help.
Go into IE. Click on Tools on the menu bar, click on Internet Options at the bottom of the dropdown list. Navigate to the Security tab on the window that pops up. Click on the world globe like icon (bluish and green ball) that says Internet. Now click Custom Level on the button that appears underneath. Now you should see a pop-up with tons of multiple choice settings options. For all of them, select "enable" or "prompt"...I recommend enable for all of them for now, especially the ActiveX related stuff.

WARNING: Do not surf the WWW while under these settings, especially questionable sites. It's a dog eat dog digital world, and you're wearing milk bone underwear with those settings. Reset them to medium or high as soon as you find out if it helped you fix/diagnose the problem.

Reg Mechanic has found 1241 problems... and uh... that's a lot. In the trial version, I can only fix 6 of them, so I'll back up stuff and restore instead.

I think it's now more than a simple IE problem... Aiyah...

The same thing is happening with System Restore... all I get is a blank page...

Is there no other way to restore (I haven't made any external backups) =(

Did you try a Disk Scan?

Otherwise it might be a driver causing the problem.

Never had your experience, but I did have some drivers make vista act funny.

Otherwise, do the dreaded Reinstall :(

How do I check if it's a driver that's causing the problem? (I'm not using Vista btw, it's only a Vista visual style that I'm using)

I'm trying to avoid a reinstall, because I've never done it before. I've burnt off the recovery discs... and I'm told they would return to factory settings. Is this a reinstall? I'm a noob at this. :(

Ok since it's not vista forget driver problems, but I would still uninstall Lenovo care to see what happens?

First things first, did you try System Restore? VERY IMPORTANT to use if you didn't try this yet.

Try taking the battery and ac adapter out, put it back in and turn on, then start it on normal. Let the ScanDisk run. (it will run automactic) .

If this things don't work, then yes reinstall is using the recovery disc.

If you have a XP retail disc, you can load it to repair.

Thats the best advice I can give you being the your laptop in not infront of me.

Scan disk froze on stage 4... I've tried System Restore earlier, but I couldn't even get it running (there was nothing in the window)

...so before I reinstall, can you(or anybody) give me a quick run through of what happens? Do I just put the CD in? Do I need to set it to boot? How do I do that?

    Thanks

Try doing so thru SAFE MODE. Not sure which "F" key enters into it on bootup. I think it's F3 or F4. Just reset and press all the "F" keys to try to get into SAFEMODE and try to restore or scandisk from there.

Have you tried an uninstall then reinstall of IE? Might be something (relatively) quick to try before doing a full system reinstall.

Yea, go for the reinstall. It sucks, but if your stuck then your stuck. Espeacially if you can't even Restore or attempt to scan disk.

I have tried that already. I don't think it's an IE problem anymore... more like a Windows problem.

Have you tried disabling your "Vista visual style"?

I'd also recommend (if all the above hasn't helped and if you haven't done it) an a/v and spyware scan. Also, since it's Internet Explorer, run Hijack This for browser helper objects.

The Visual Style shouldn't be a problem. I've had that for awhile, and it hasn't caused any problems. BUT I've also tried disabling it... to no avail. I've done the AV/spyware/malware scans already. Also, since it's affected system restore and other restore programs, I don't think it's isolated to IE anymore?

    Would running HijackThis help?

Can I get some help with reinstalling, if that's my last resort?

Before doing a reinstall, I found this discussion:

    http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread33879-5.html

That page has several fixes on them (you might check page 4 of that discussion, too). Several of the messages on page 5 talk about the blank IE screen and a blank SR screen.

Try entering Safe Mode in WinXP, and see if the problem persists even then. If it doesn't, run some counter-hijack tools and scans. Try to uninstall software you recently put on your machine, no matter how innocuous looking. Finally uninstall the Vista theme pack, it does mess with XP internally and could definitely be the culprit.

THANK YOU! System Restore is back, IE works again, but Lenovo Care is still showing up weird, so I decided to restore back a week. Hopefully all goes well.

Congrats! Glad it worked out. I hope the restore fixes everything for you.

I hate doing a re-install, so try to find a fix. Unless I know the system is really fried.
