Right now I'm using an outdated free version of DeadAIM, but I was wondering if there were any other free IM clients that are better? Cross-client compatibility would be great too, and a nice user interface.

Trillian has a very nice interface and is a cross-platform messaging client, the basic version is free. GAIM is another decent one, which is also cross-platform and free. But I like AIM with version 5.5.3495 with DeadAim 4.5. It is clean, fast, simple, and best yet it has tabs.

Here is a link to GAIM:

Thanks for the links and reply. I'm using Dead AIM + AIM too right now, but my version of AIM is 5.5.3491...do you know if it's a huge difference? Can you IM while away?

Would you know where I can download the older version of AIM?

The difference between your version and mine are minimal, check the changelog for that. But you can't IM while away. I don't really care to do that, but my uses an add-on called middle man to do that

    http://middleman.krunchsoftware.com/

But be aware that you need a certain version of aim to work with the IM while away feature for middle man. They suggest a version to use on there site.

If you want older versions of aim go to here:

    http://www.oldversion.com/

It has a bunch of older version software. Great site for some people who hate the newer versions of software like me.
