Newbie here :D I am probably going to buy a new acer 1410 to replace my antiquated '02 Dell Inspiron. I was wondering if I'd be able to uninstall the windows vista that comes standard on the 1410 and use my the cd(s) that came with my Dell to install XP. I'm assuming XP must be on the original restore cds that came with my Dell

Why would you want to downgrade? Vista is safer, easier to use, manages resources better and actually has power management. And if you buy that Acer soon you'll get Windows 7.

Buy it now and you'll get an upgrade to Windows 7 anyhow.

The answer to the original question is no. Dell restore discs can only be used on Dell systems. Furthermore you don't have a license for XP, so even if you managed to get an XP install disc, you wouldn't be able to activate XP.

Thanks for the input. The only reason I was concerned is that I've been reading up on the netbooks and it seems there are lots of complaints regarding vista's tendency to hog up memory, thus prompting the "downgrade" to xp f(which I love). Looking forward to getting my new Acer and experiencing the vista thing for myself.
