Silly question, but I have an Asus G1 Laptop, which came with Vista. If I choose to upgrade to Windows 7, would be be relatively easy? Would it be as easy as I think... drop the upgrade DVD into the laptop and running the upgrade?

I know it sounds silly but I want to clear up my paranoia about attempting this when I get Windows 7.

Yep! It is as easy as h3ll.
Just backup your importants stuffs to another USB storage and prepare the drivers and software you need. Basically, almost all Vista's drivers/software will works on Windows 7.
If you're installing 64bit Windows 7, then, you might need 64bit Drivers/Software sometime but 32bit drivers/software will work on 64bit too.

Just about anything but 32 bit drivers will work in 64 bit. So 32 bit programs should work, but drivers that are 32 bit will not work in 64 bit.

Yep! You're right. I forgot to mention except Drivers.
Software will be OK most of the time.
32bit sucks. 64bit is way to live.

I have the original G1 like you have and installed Windows 7 in the Beta and RC form. I chose to install the 64 bit to see how it ran on the RC.
Windows 7 64 bit went smoothly, but I had a hard time finding a 64 bit driver for the web cam, I tried the ones on ASUS web site and they would not load. I came across a driver that did finally work.

Here is the file name: V6.64.20.001_CR_logo_SID1223761_Vista64

It is strange it is found under keyboard drivers in the various download sites but it is a web cam driver.

I haven't loaded my Windows 7 RTM yet to see how well it works and what driver issues it may have. (I went to a Microsoft efficiency event this week and got a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate full released version, Sweet huh)

If you have any questions I would be glad to help.

Hey Thanks Folks Big Time. Completely set my mind at ease.

I was wanting to go with 64 Bit, and I completely understand the points noted above, but with 2 GB RAM would it make sense?

Scott / othonda did you add more RAM to your G1? I was thinking about it, but not sure if the G1 has only 2 DIMM Slots or 4?

Make sense. I always use 64bit now a day. XD
Even the machine is now above 3GB ram, I will still use 64bit OSes.
64bit OSes are more stable than 32bit OSes. In addition, I got higher benchmarking with 64bit OSes.

I did not add more ram, I believe you can pull a 1 gig stick and replace with a 2 gig to get 3gig's. The chipset is limited to 3 gig total, a few reports on this forum suggest people have installed 4 and the bios see's it, but the OS only see's or uses 3.

I am using my lappy for older games, internet, and office apps. I have never seen the memory usage even get close to my installed 2 gig's. The closest it has gotten was around 1.3 gigs.

I haven't decided which version of win 7 to load now that I have RTM version from my seminar. I presently have a triple boot config, xp 32 bit, vista 32 bit and win 7 64 bit. Would like to get down to one OS if possible.

I know this thread is a little old, but I need some help.

I am running W7 64-bit RC on my G1s right now (dual-booted with old Vista 32), and everything works fine, except for bluetooth. I have looked around, and tried to find out how to get it working, with no avail.

I have W7 Pro 64 coming in the mail, and would like to have BT working when I upgrade it (wiping and installing just W7).

I have tried installing the Wireless Console (32b, didn't see a 64b version) and 64b BT Vista drivers, but it doesn't seem to work.

Has anyone managed to get BT to work? Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.

I'm trying to do a clean install of Windows 7 ultimate 32-bit on a second partition on my ASUS G1S... but I keep getting an error about not being able to update the boot configuration and the install fails...

Is this a common error for the G1S? Or should I be doing an upgrade instead of a clean install?

    I have bios version 300.

othonda, I have a question for you, I have a G1 also, and I've installed Windows 7 64bit, and I'm having problems with the 4 "hotkey" status buttons. I can press any of the 4 hotkey, and nothing happens. I have been told that with Windows 7, they won't work, is this what you found also on your system. I would love to get them to work but it doesn't look good from here, just wondered if you had a more positive luck with your G1.

    Thanks,

I was able to get everything working.
Here is what you need to get everything running.
Download and install the following files from ASUS downloads. You may need to do some searching for the files, if I recall I used the G51 series then selected win 7 64 bit.
Run ATKDrv first, reboot. Then install the
rest. A few things to note. I do not use power for gear so the button with the running man icon does nothing. To get the touchpad to turn on/off you will need to download the synaptics driver below as well. I am quite pleased with how the G1 handles windows 7.

    ATKDrv_V104321575_Win7_64
    ATKHOTKEY_WIN7_32_WIN7_64_100051
    ATKMedia_WIN7_32_WIN7_64_200005
    ATKOSD2_WIN7_32_WIN7_64_700005

    Download from synaptics: http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers

    Synaptics_v14_0_3_C_XP64_Vista64_Win7-64_Signed_default

VAZGUARD: Try using the Blue tooth stack from Toshiba, they have a windows 7 64 bit version. I use the blue tooth for my microsoft notebook 5000 bluetooth mouse and it works great. Go to the below link to get the driver. Also Don't use the wireless console its garbage, uninstall it
You BT and wifi will work just fine without it.

If you guys have any more questions I would be glad to help where I can

    Thanks Again,

You can get rid of that by installing the Ricoh card reader driver. (Even though the reader works fine with the default drivers that Win 7 loads) Here's the file name. Again this can be found under the G51 series of notebook drivers.

Anybody have issues with cpu stuck at certain multipliers? My G1s recently changed to window 7, but now my t7500 is constantly stuck at 6x, max speed should be 11x. Even running stress test programs won't bring the multiplier up. Anybody know what is wrong?

My G1S works fine on win7. I just have a problem with the webcam driver.

I tried many drivers I have found on the aus support site. All of them always throw an error when I try to run it. No error message, just an empty error pop up dialog.

    Anyone can help :(

    Thanks.

I used the driver othonda referenced- it's dodgy at times (doesn't always turn on when Skype or CMA-D asks) but it works.

    othonda:

Thanks so much for the reply. I downloaded the first listing for the Win7 x64 drivers and proceeded to install them. The setup got to the installation of the actual drivers and then asked for me to "plug in" my bluetooth device. My BT chip is of course internal, so I cannot do this. How did you get around this?

    http://downloadmirror.intel.com/df-support/12662/eng/V6.64.20.001_CR_logo_SID1223761_Vista64.zip

The installer doesn't function properly in Windows 7 64-bit, so go into the device manager and do this:

Right-click on the "USB 2.0 Image Capture Device" and select "Update Driver"
    Click "Browse my computer"
Click "Let me Pick from a list..."
    Click "Have Disk..."
Navigate to the folder you extracted the driver to and select "STK1135.inf".
    Click "Open"

    That should do it.

    Completely agree with Pyronious above.

Having just followed Othonda's steps and then Pyronious above - after living with Vista 32 and Win 7 64 minus a webcam since Jan 09 - I am happy to report a working webcam (just had to go into device properties and flip image).

My web cam is now described in device manager under "General" tab as:-

    USB2.01 1.3M WebCam

    Device type: Imaging devices
    Manufacturer: D-MAX, (STK-1135)
    Location: Port_#0006.Hub_#0005

Nb - this "may" only work if your G1 has the same vendor model webcam as mine Under the "Details" tab - Property - Hardware Ids I see:-

    USB\VID_05E1&PID_0501&REV_0005
    USB\VID_05E1&PID_0501

Nb 2 - I say "may" only work ... as for all I know these webcam drivers work on all or most G1s - it would be interesting to see if this set works for other webcam versions.

    Great advice - thanks Pyronious!

Win 7 64 on my G1 is excellent - defintely makes it feel like its running like it always should have.

Couple of queries about the display for other G1 users.

Re the 1650 x 1050 display and apparent loss of brightness - I must have had this laptop since mid 2007 and I'm sure mine is getting fainter over time. Is this a common problem for laptops / lcds generally, or is this an issue for G1s?

Another query, any recommendations for current laptops with 1650 x 1050 displays and above on a budget? As laptops have gotten cheaper and cheaper I've stuck with my G1 in the face of possible impule buying decisions based on the lower resolution offered with cheap laptops - that low resolution just doesn't cut it for me - it looks yuck and is difficult to work with.

I love this laptop but Im thinking the time is nigh that i just leave it permantly hooked up to the home theatre system!

    Any suggestions welcome.

I hope this doesn't sound terrible, but I'm having difficulties with my ATKDrv Utility.

I've just done a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional and I'm rounding up drivers from the Asus support website. My main issue is that the .zip I downloaded for the ATKDrv Utility doesn't contain any executable files and I don't know what to do with the three files inside. They are:

    ATK64AMD.sys
    atk0100.cat
    ATK0100.inf

The last one I listed does say something about loading the driver to the system32/drivers folder, but that isn't enough for me to fully understand what I'm to do.

Edit: I think I figured it out. I went into my device manager and right clicked on the Unknown Device found in the Other devices. I told it to update the driver for said Unknown Device and pointed it to the folder containing those unzipped files I listed above. Does this sound like I did it right?

hi everyone i also installed win 7 x64 on my G1S-A1. I have 2 unkown devices though and maybe someone here can point me to the right driver for them.
I have read the thread but so far my microphone works and auto installed itself with the OS installation.

the unknown devices are called: Base System Device
    one has the following info:

Location: PCI bus 8, device 1, function 2
    ID:
    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&SUBSYS_15D71043&REV_12
    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&SUBSYS_15D71043
    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&CC_088000
    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0843&CC_0880

    The other these:
    PCI bus 8, device 1, function 3
    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_15D71043&REV_12
    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_15D71043
    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&CC_088000
    PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_0592&CC_0880

it seems to me mabye is jut one only thing, possibly the webcam? i didnt install the asus util for the webcam, maybe i should?

    cheers and thanks for help!

Go to Crucial.com and find your computer model--they have an AUTOMATIC SCAN THAT TELLS YOU WHAT YOU NEED EXACTLY. Great people to talk to. They also on the same site have a VIDEO that shows you how to install the Ram. I have a G1S and it has 2 pieces of ram giving me a total of G of ram so I ordered the 6400 ram as the lady on the phone suggested for $56 dollars.
If you do a little crying & whining like I did they dropped the price $3 dollars & gave me Expedited shipping.

Takes about 5 minutes to install---so easy Ray Charles could do it. All you need is a very tiny Phillips head screwdriver.
