I've an Asus EEEPC 1005 Netbook with a broken LCD screen (i.e. completely unreadible).
So far no problem, as I could use a spare monitor as the (external) screen.

However, I was this week confronted with a corrupted "windows\system32\config\system" file. I therefore started a re-install of Windows XP from the original CD's I received with the Netbook. The re-install from CD seemed to work fine, but after the automatic reboot at the end of the re-install, the external monitor stopped to work. Fn-F8 doesn't bring it up anymore.

The Netbook is playing the Windows Install music, probably waiting for me to finish the installation by chosing some settings. However, without monitor, I've no clue what to do

    Any advice?

Most commands during setup will allow you to choose a letter or hit enter (or tab and ENTER). What I would do is load Windows XP in a virtual machine on another computer and duplicate your keyboard commands on one from another.

For example, when the virtual machine says Next, that means you type N on the virtual machine, then the netbook. The follow along on additional screens.

    Thanks Gerryf19,

However, I would assume that the original ASUS CD I got with the Netbook only can be used to re-install Windows on a genuine ASUS PC, and not do a new install on a virtual PC

You will never know until you try. That said, perhaps someone else you know has asus pc and you can follow along there.
