5% should be ok, u wont be able to create as many restore points, but i'll do

but if u have plenty of disk space, why bother?

    cheers ...

like qhn said, aside from having less restore points it's OK.

Yup, it's fine. I keep mine at the original but i'll probably limit it at some point as i may need the space later. My 400GB is dwindling and fast. :(

I got rid of system restore (XP home) because it was a redundant space waster after I bought drive backup software. It shaved 12GB off the image of my C:\ drive. Also, when I called on it for help in dire times, it gave me a "System restore failed" error.

"C:\Program Files\Steam" is the biggest folder on my drive, weighing in at 11GB. I only have 33GB of stuff in total on my 120GB drive. Get rid of the games and I could be happy with a 40GB drive.

Try getting a notebook and living with a max of 250gb ;) I'll never run out of space as I'll be on my next laptop before that happens and I'm sure the drives will be bigger.

I only have 13 gig left on my C: drive and it's getting smaller as I add more programs, music and photos. Once I'm done editing my photos I can just keep them on an external drive which will give me another 8 gig.

I suppose I could use some of the 12 gig available on my back-up D: drive but I'll probably end up getting a bigger HD.

Personally, I use both. I leave System Restore on all the time. After I make a periodic ghost image, I clear the current restore points. That way I have more than one option as to what point in time I want to restore to. With ghost only, I can only restore back to my most recent ghost.

Is it possible to make System restore use space from another Partition or External Disk?

I'm not talking about restoring other Partitions or Disk, I'm just talking about using the space on another Partition/Drive or External disk for C:/ drive restore points.

I don't think so but maybe you could make the restore points and then put them on your external HD.

I don't think so, but then again I am not sure how Vista decides where to store the restore points.

How would you go about moving them???

I would never disable system restore. It has bailed me out of trouble quite a few times.

This reminds me of the old auto racing adage. There are two types of drivers, those who have hit the wall and those that will.

System Restore is the equivalent of the "safer barrier" that has found its way on to most of the race tracks around the world. It is there to keep you from hitting the wall. It has little effect on performance of your machine and only takes up a relatively small portion of your hard drive. It is not a replacement for a good back up regimen, but is a good safety net for the periods between backups.

(As I mentioned before, I leave it on but I clear the restore points after each full backup I do.)

As always, your mileage may vary...

I can't seem to remember how to clear restore points. Could you remind me? On another note, sometimes I wish I had restore points in my brain.

Right click on any drive icon, select properties. (see capture.jpg below)
Click on Disk clean up. (see capture1.jpg below)
Click on the advanced tab. (see capture2.jpg below)

The second option there will allow you to remove all but the last system restore point.
