I am on a very slow connection right now with no other options. Google's doesn't exist anymore, and fasterfox stopped working after ver. 2.0 it seems.

I have IE and firefox 3 to work with. What free options are out there right now?

Images are one of the slowest parts. Compression of images would be a huge benefit.

Unfortunately, most images are now either JPG or PNG, both of which are pretty much as compressed as they can be.

Opera web browser has this functionality built in, as Opera Turbo.

Opera is probably your best bet. But I would try some real world benchmarks.

Download each browser and see how long it takes to open a few of your favorite sites. Theoretical vs pragmatic.

any kind of web accellerator/compressor is going to depend on a distant service acting as a proxy for you, grabbing pages and images. The proxy compresses the stream and sends it along to you where it's decompressed and displayed.

This kind of service obviously costs money to implement and maintain. So the proxy service has to sell ads (which are inserted into your web stream) or operate on a subscription basis.

Do you a) want someone analyzing your browsing and using the results to push ads to you or b) charging you an arm/leg for their services?

If a) you are not paying close attention to your privacy.

If b) you are better off spending that subscription money on a faster connection.
