I've been running Vista Home Premium since June. I've had to deal with the usual early adopter issues. But WMDC seems to be broken now and not repairable. I'll go without sync for a few days, but might just go back to XP, too. If I had a full retail version of Vista and Office 2007 I would have already gone back to XP.

Windows Mobile Device Center was written as a successor to the ActiveSync program that was previously used to synchronize Windows CE based devices with Windows operating systems prior to Windows Vista. The first public release was available in October of 2006 as a beta version meant for use with Windows Vista RC1. In February of 2007, the first official release was made available for download, and in June of 2007, Windows Mobile Device Center was updated to work with the Windows Mobile 6 operating system. With the release of Windows Mobile Device Center, Pocket PC 2000 and Pocket PC 2002 operating systems were effectively phased out of native compatibility with Windows Vista.

WMDC 6.1, Vista Home Premium, WM2003SE. All should work together.

WMDC might suck, but is it worse than ActiveSync? I find that hard to imagine, but then I haven't used WMDC. :)

I myself would rather ActiveSync on Vista rather than WMDC. As much smoothly and Reliable as Vista works for me, WMDC sucks!!

Don't get me wrong, WMDC works. But it's Slow as hell and sometimes unreliable.
I wish somebody would figure out a way to put Active Sync on Vista. Active Sync was much more simple and got the job done much more quickly.

Haha, my exact thoughts! I used ActiveSync on three different pda's, and while I never lost data, I'd frequently get multiple copies of the same documents, notes and emails.

Hmm, that's how I'd describe ActiveSync... But if WMDC is worse, it must be baaaad.

ActiveSync never gave me any problems at all.

Just a guess, but I think it's WMDC's UI that's half the problem.

In my experience since June, WMDC only works intermittently, and inconsistently, and most recently, immobilized.

It is for this precise reason that I have kept an XP PC.

    ActiveSync for ever!!!!

I've noticed no one has mentioned the update.... odd....

Vista mobile center works great for me... I have a treo 700wx... then again, activesync worked great for me as well.

Anyway, download this: (vista 32) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...F1-E46A-4A5F-A791-09F07AAA1914&displaylang=en

or go here to read more and see other download options: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx

edit: Oh, I see system64 actually did post this info... this is what you need.. works great. If you are still having issues, I would look at the mobile device itself for solutions... could be you have old active sync files in there or if you are attempting to sync with an xp computer and vista computer, don't... does not work that great.... you could have issues, from what I'm reading around the web. I did not, but that is me (again).

Oh, you have WM 03 SE... I have WM 5. Maybe that is an issue? You are right, it says that it should work... hmm...

About the only suggestion I have is to "kill" the device and format it, then reinstall everything. Then sync with only vista from there on out.

    you might also try: http://wmexperts.com/

They are the same people that own treocentral.com ....

You might be better off on a site that caters to mobile devices.

Lol I must be the only one that has a loooooooooooooooooong experience with both Active Sync (since 2003) and WMDC (since Vista) as you call it, and like WMDC more. I don't find it slow. It works exactly the same as Active Sync with my t-mobile MDA PRO (WM5 device) and some other devices I have.

I plug it in - it does its job. Bluetooth sync works flawlessly too. No issues whatsoever. I actually hated Active Sync because it forced me to change the device name upon hard reset since it already had the same profile. It is fixed in the 4.5 version (4 years they needed for this).

I actually don't see the multiple copies with WMDC and I know that Activesync used to make them quite happily. I also remember that I had to click Sync twice in order to resolve one single file sync issue time after time. All that gone with WMDC.

But I believe some people have issues with it too. So I guess ActiveSync 4.5 is the only solution to try actually.

    Cheers,

    Ivan

I've got an open question with Microsoft about it. WMDC, like ActiveSync before it, works, then for no apparent reason stops working. I've always been able to get it working again before, but not this time.

I am sorry, but I don't know the solution.

I have all USB patches coming in the SP1. Perhaps this helps?

Do you have any additional USB devices that block WMDC? Like logitech G5 that installs two HID devices that make my brightness hid devices dead (along with huge FPS drop in FEAR). And light sensor stops working. All those devices are on USB controller and can interfere with each other.

Then Windows mobile devices have strange issues with RNDIS activesync mode - instead of serial. On sync it kills your WPA enabled wireless! I have a patch (called USB Switch) that makes WM device communicating using serial mode - making no problems in Windows wireless. Interestingly - with Vista WMDC I don't have to run this patch and WPA wireless connection remains OK! In short: XP + ActiveSync + WPA wireless = problems.

Since I have no issues with WMDC I cannot directly help you, but I'll be happy to help you if you have specific questions that I can check or reproduce.

I got the USB driver failure resolved by a complete reinstall of Vista. Certainly don't want to do that again any time soon.

I still cannot sync Outlook nor Files.

I may get the iPaq 211 when it comes out anyway, my old X50V running WM2003SE is getting a bit old, so perhaps WM6 will behave better. If not, at least the iPaq might have some resale value.
