I have a mini stereo jack plugged into my line-in slot from a xbox360.
Windows Vista recognizes it because the flashing green for line-in matches what the volume "should be" at.

    Here is my line-in settings:

    Here are my speaker settings:

As can be seen, i haven't forgot to take the mute off anything,
Vista does recognize the input but is not transferring it to my speakers.
And my speakers are connected and fine because they work when i use my desktop.

This seems to be a commen issue with dell computers using Vista. After searching through forums, dell users have seem to use the following as a solution:

I fall into the second category of people that don't have the "EnableInputMonitor entry".

    I followed the following path:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\Settings\filter\SpeakerHp\

but when i opened 0000, there was no settings/ filter/ or speakerHp to be found. This is all it has:

anyone have any idea where to go from here?
ive been at it for days.. lol

I say just make a new Key. Settings, then Filter and try it from there. You'll need more information. Like the different reg keys under Settings and filter when you make new keys.

Its no guarentee that it will work and I have a feeling there is a good reason why it is not in your registry.

    pryo214,

I encountered the exact problem you describe in post #1. However, i was able to circumvent this by browsing through the other digits and notice digit "0007" in my VISTA edition (home) have the setting and the rest. Thus, i didn't create a new key but instead continue with the instruction, but instead of 0000, i go to 0007. This is the instruction that i follow, which was successful.

    1) Open regedit (Start->Run, type regedit)
    2) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\ 0007\Settings\filter\SpeakerHp\
    3) Create a new Binary Value
    4) Give it the name EnableInputMonitor
    5) Set it's value to 01
    6) Restart your machine
    7) Open your Playback Devices (right click on volume control icon in system tray, select Playback Devices)
    8) Open the Speakers/Headphones
    9) Go to the levels tab
    10) Unmute the input monitor
    11) Restart your machine

Notice that I add another step, step 11, which was crucial for me. Mime didn't work until the computer was rebooted. Furthermore, understand that digit "0007" is not be all or nothing. I suspect with other VISTA version, one might find SETTINGS under different digit. Lastly, my microphone has a mute button and I realize that I need to turn it ON if I need to use my mic for karaokee (as example). I don't understand why, other than it prevents interference. On the other hand, i need to turn the mute button OFF for other things, like webcam...
