Currently my Windows 8.0 core edition on my 2012 Zenbook Prime, is experiencing problems with certain external USB devices. So I thought to update the Intel xHCI driver.

    Device Manager says:

    Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 Microsoft
    Driver Date: 19/9/2012 <---------
    Driver Version: 6.2.9200.16420

The driver is pretty old which may indicate why it is giving problems with newer external devices. For example I cannot read SMART through external USB3.0 enclosures. Though smartmontools should be able to.

Updating the driver from this device-manager menu doesn't work. It says that I have the latest driver . There is however an Intel series 7 chipset driver on Intel.com dating february 2014

    Ihttp://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/software/server-software/other-server-software/intel-usb-3-0-extensible-host-controller-driver.html

But it says it's for 7 + Windows Server 2008. Is this the right driver for my Windows8.0 operating system on my laptop?
If not how do I update my the Intel 7-series driver which is from 2012?

Worse case scenario: Am I stuck with outdated unsuported INtel 7 chepset and non-working newer USB devices?

    Thanks

There doesn't appear to be a newer set of drivers for USB 3.0 running on the 7-Series chipset. Any support for newer operating systems must come from the OS itself. Regardless, you really should update your computer to Windows 8.1. Microsoft is no longer providing security and other updates to Windows 8. You should be able to update straight up through the Windows app store without losing data. Alternatively, if you have your original Windows 8 license key available, you can use MS' media creation tool to make a bootable USB thumb drive with the full version of Windows 8.1 on it in order to do a clean installation.
