    Hey guys,

I have my Automatic Updating set so I can choose when to download and install the necessary updates. I heard this is better for system performance and I wouldnt want a download and install to happen when playing a game. Anyways, how do I set it so the little icon in the task tray doesnt show up. Also, is there a way so it's not yellow in the Security settings?

Ok thanks :) I thought I was suppose to leave that on just incase windows needed to alert me of something. I guess that alert is only for the Windows Update which I turned off. It is better to not have auto update correct?

yeah because some updates are still bugged or mess with the current stuff, but do update the small stuff like windows defender, junk mail blocker and stuff

The best option for Windows update is "Never Check for updates". This improves system performance during start up. But be sure to check for updates manually as and when required.

"Best" only if you are worried about getting every last ounce of performance, but in this case I think the benefits of using Windows Updates far outweighs the drawbacks. If enough people do this, then we will wind up with hordes of unpatched systems and more spam and botnets will be out there. It's automatic for a reason -- because most people cant be bothered (and rightly shouldn't be expected) to remember to manually run updates.

Leave it set to "Check for updates but let me decide when to download and install them" for the best of both worlds.

yea thats what i do. if your computer slows down that much because it is searching for updates, your machine is probably to slow to run vista anyway

But the windows update checker (svchost for WU) is such a slow poke. It will keep the CPU in 50-100% usage several minutes after start up. I turned off automatic updates and my system is fast immediately after start up.

Anyway for most of the people who don't want to check for updates manually the best option is to set to "let me choose when to install".

You can turn off WU and check yourself the start up cpu usage.
