There's a standard way to repartition disk...i.e if you want to allocate more to D:

Help & support lists this method:
Can I repartition my hard disk?

    Click to open Computer Management.

In the Navigation pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.

Right-click the volume you want to shrink, and then click Shrink Volume.

But now when I try to shrink C: the available space is '0' ...but it has more than 30 GB free space.
I want to allocate only 10 GB free space...and remaining to D: because D: is for all the data.

Can someone suggest me an alternative?

I mean...some third party application for vista which is reliable.

Where are you seeing the "available space is 0" and the "more than 30 GB free space" numbers? I haven't played with the built in partition tool for shrinking, I always use BootIT NG. Its a bit cryptic but effective tool. But it occurs to me you MIGHT need to defrag first and consolidate the free space. Then try the shrink again.

no no...i think u misunderstood.....The space available for SHRINKING is 0.....meaning i can't do further partition on it even though it has free space.

If you're using the built-in partitioner in Vista, it'll do that. It's very picky about how much space you can allocate. You'll want to use a third-party application.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend anything since I always end up booting in Ubuntu and getting it done that way but there are a ton of free applications out there so I'm sure someone will step up to the plate and suggest something.

I understand that. My question, which you ignored, was WHERE are you seeing the two numbers? The first was OBVIOUSLY in the shrink dialog of disk management. Where do you see the other? Is thios reported in the Disk Managment tool or just the number from explorer?

But I think the issue MIGHT be in the screen shot below. If you have a pagefile on this drive, it may be allocated near the end of the partition and a pagefile can't be moved during the shrink operation or even during a defrag run under vista.

Do you already have a D: partition? If so temporarily reallocate your pagefile to the D: drive and then try the shrink. From the screenshot, you might also need to remove the existing restore points. (Before you do THAT you might want to image the partition to DVD's, otherwise you won't have a fall back position should something go awry.)

I am relatively certain the issue is with one or more non-movable files preventing the shrink. That's why I suggested a defrag with free space consolidation. But I now realize that the pagefile is not going to move even during free space consolidation.
