I have an inspiron 1520 with windows xp and ubuntu on it. How do i back up or make a clone of the entire hard disk? i don't want to copy just one partition, but the entire Hard disk with both OS on it and the boot order of the Operating systems, basically make a ghost copy. I want to be able to take the newly cloned harddisk, and plug it in immediately after the process, and still be able to to both both OS and everything without any hassles.

What are some good programs to do this? the program can be for linux or windows, but preferably for windows XP. Thanks.

    Try Clonezilla live CD.

It walks you through the process pretty well even if you've never done it before.

    And it's free.

One happy user here - obviously, YMMV.

    Good luck.

I agree. Clonezilla works good, but you will need an external or 2nd drive to save the image to. The one thing I like about clonezilla is it doesn't waste space. If your drive is a 1TB drive with only 200Gb used, Clonezilla's image will only be 200Gb.
