Depends on what you're doing and how many programs you have opened. Vista is very hungry for RAM, so the more you have, the better it will perform. IMO, 2GB is the minimum for Vista.

1 GB will run Vista, but 2 GB will run Vista with Aero without much lag. So I'd say go with 2 GB RAM.

HUGE difference. When I got this laptop it had 2 512's and I replaced w 2x2g's and it has made a big difference. Before my usage was at 60% sometimes now its down to 50% at the most with alot of things running at the same time. I agree with the above, 2g's should be the minimum, lol, "Vista Capable" ram requirements.

I don't know guys..........Vista runs just as well on my HP dv6000z with 1GB of RAM as XP. Of course, it took some tweaking and killing a few background processes, but now i only have 36 processes in Task Manager(which is just as much as my WinXP on the same machine) and i'm only using 511mb of RAM(around 500mb still available) with Opera, Emule, Sidebar and Aero running.
I think the problem is that most people don't know what background stuff to kill or even how to kill them, and when installing programs, they just let them start with with Windows.

Oh, and i am using a 2GB SD card as ReadyBoost. Don't know if that helps to keep more RAM free, but it's supposed to speed up your system, so why not use it, right?

Depends what "goodies" you have running in vista IMO. With sidebar, that takes up a lot of resources, but without, 1gb runs vista just as well as XP... Well, Vista RC2 at least. :p Dunno about Aero or flip 3d since my gfx card can't handle them... Which is why my new T60 w/ X1400 is on it's way! :D

I have 4 gadgets running, and it is taking only 9megabytes of RAM. I've been checking the RAM usage of different applications in Vista for several days now, and the sidebar has never been over 10 megabytes. So, my conclusion is that all this talk of sidebar being a resource hog is hogwash. :)

Also, i have been running Vista sidebar in WinXP for months now, and while the RAM usage under XP seems to be higher, it has never been taking up more than 45 megabytes of RAM.

I used to be extremely sceptical of Vista....to a point of bashing it even. But after receiving my HP Vista upgrade about a month ago, and installing it on my laptop a few days ago, i've been pleasantly surprised.
So far no crashes whatsoever, no driver troubles, etc.

I meant resources in general. Not just ram, but cpu too. My cpu usage never dips below 30% with sidebar open. I could've had a resource hungry gadget open though...

Yep, must have been some faulty gadget, or something. My Sidebar uses no CPU....well, maybe every once in a while you see it go up to 1%, but that's all.

It was a default Vista gadget, haha. The cpu speedometer/usage thing. (Can't remember the exact name, since I boot into vista once in a blue moon, lol) I don't dislike vista or anything, it's just my hardware keeps me from really enjoying it, and I've already got XP set-up the way I like it... So not enough reason to switch yet.
