I just tried it, and I gotta say, I found it to load much faster then Chrome (and Chrome loads faster then FF3 for me). I am talking much faster.

Website load time, I really could not tell but Opera 9.6 is very responsive in that area too.

But in RAM usage? Same three tabs opened, Opera used about 1/3 less RAM then Chrome.

Anyone else have try Opera 9.6 yet? If not, you might want to give it a try.
Now if only I can move that dang tab bar below the URL bar...

I've tried Opera 9.62. Not a huge fan. Love their smooth scrolling though.

I have it, and I’ve been using it for a several years now... ever since they went free (ad sponsored) I think it was version 5.0 or something. I never really used it as my primary browser, however I used it half of the time along with IE before I switched almost completely to FF few years back. But I always have an up to date version of opera on my notebook. Because Opera was the first good alternative I found for IE, and it has kind of a sentimental value for me :rolleyes2:

I just downloaded Opera 9.62 - and yes, its very fast, faster than Firefox for me.

But it has its problems - www.timesonline.co.uk doesn't show/render correctly.

So still the odd bug - else, very nice - it loads NBR fast, then lags at the end...

i have used it. imo i dont like it. its okay and is pretty fast for me but def not as fast as firefox.. i personally like the fast scrolling of firefox better then the smoothness of opera, opera didnt look right to me. and didnt render things right for me. i didnt like how like my verizon homepage was not centered like normal but it was shifted all the way to the left. things like that

and for me opera mem usage was not to much better than ff3

That just about sums up my main problem with Opera...compatibility issues with websites! That is probably the only reason why I will not use Opera as my main.

...Still waiting on Chrome to fix the password bug and add a RSS reader.

I've been using it for 12 yrs now, probably why I never understood the tab craze, since they have had it that long.

Opera has always been teh quicker loading browser. My only complaint is memory usage (around 250-300MB) when I use 20-30 tabs, which is pretty much all the time, but I have nothing to compare it to as I have used it religiously.

Except when working on MOSS/MOPS 07 as MS requires you to use IE, there is no other choice.

Opera all the way. Nothing can beat its speed dialing, smooth scrolling and a very fast back button which i don't see in FF. I mean, i had to wait for 1-2sec for FF's back button but in Opera its a snap.

Opera's name is not important whether it's cool or not. What matters is the speed and stability, atleast for me. If you have enough memory, memory usage is not a problem unless your doing another cpu intensive stuff.

We can't really judge how fast a certain page loads in our respective browsers, led as we all have different internet connections, don't we?

    Cheers.

The speed of your connection is not gunna vary from browser to browser is it? Thus you should be able to judge which browser loads pages faster.

As I mentioned above, my only problem is that Opera does not load some pages properly.

Point taken sir. Only if we judge our own connection using diff. browsers, yes. People can't really say this browser's faster than that generally as to some ppol have slower or faster connection than others. :D

    cheers, mate.

I have it installed, mostly for the novelty. I bring it up now and again, and keep it current, but Firefox is my main browser. I also have IE installed (like I have choice :( ), but cannot recall the last time it was invoked. When was the Crimean War?

I have been using Opera for the last 5 yrs and I love it. I am always up-to-date with the latest stable release. I did have problems with Gmail and a few other sites, but since 9.5, I have not encountered these problems. I use a very minimalistic layout of Opera - a variation of the classic theme. I find this yeilds greater screen space. One problem I do have is that some of the Web 2.0 sites don't render too well - for example, I use Google Docs and Zoho a lot...while Zoho has advised me that they are working to have Opera compatible to their site (don't know how long that will take), there are sometimes major problems with Google Docs. But then again, when using Google Docs, I use Chrome.

But as a browser of first choice, I use Opera and I am happy with it.

    Cheers!

Well, I tried the TimesOnline link provided and while the page opens, it does not render properly...what should be appearing on the righhand side of the page is displayed way at the bottom...I think he means that!

I suspect its just a detail that's incompatible with Opera.

My webpage (part of the maths course)

The menus should display in Arial (as the rest) and in IE and FF they do - in Opera its Times New Roman...

    (Java Script Menus)

    Edit 1:
In IE if you move your course onto a user's name it'll give you a menu - Opera doesn't at least for me.
    Edit 2:
You have to click the name...

Been using it ever since 9.60 beta was released. Opera Link custom search engines makes me happy - I'd forgotten Ask, not Amazon, was the default "a" search engine!

Odd - I have just the opposite problem :p. But that's probably because I've been using Opera long enough that its shortcuts seem natural. I suppose there's not much inherently logical in 1 for tab to the left, 2 for tab to the right, and z/x for back/forward, but it's easy to remember after awhile and quick to press.

Hmm, it doesn't load that quite right. There's a few other errors, too. Oddly though it's the most standards-compliant browser. But compatibility is definitely increasing - Youtube, Googlepages, and a couple other sites have gotten better with more recent versions (or possibly site updates).

Lack of features is my primary complaint with Chrome. Even compared to most other browsers that lack stuff such as Opera Link and Speed Dial, which I'm really used to now, Chrome is lacking, and thus it really seems featureless relative to Opera (Chrome speed dial isn't quite as good as Opera's IMO since it's automatically selected, and thus you can't rely on one site always being in the same place). In terms of speed I think Chrome might actually be faster, but Opera's definitely faster than any browser other than Chrome on most of the sites I visit. And while usually speed comes first, Opera's features save me more time than any small speed increase Chrome would come with.

Oddly enough Opera sometimes lags a lot when opening some pages for the first time...
    Any ideas on that?

    What, the lagging?
That occurs generally after I wipe out all temporary data.
Then it accelerates again... and is fine.

    (By the way: CCleaner)

huh... i don't follow the versions, so i nearly got excited - wow, a new version *again*? um... no. :) it's been on my computer for a while now.

i'm a loooong time Opera user, some other browsers are installed here too (FF, IE, safari) but rather for "testing" purposes rather than for regular use. it's true that Opera won't render some sites "correctly", meaning how the designers wanted a site to be displayed, but most often it's because they don't respect standards too much
