I don't have any programs running in a window. Sometimes I do but that is only if I am in a hurry.

I am sorry about the ambiguity. When I install software, I don't always shut down other programs. I was wondering how compliant people are when the installer says 'it is strongly recommended to shut down all programs'. Even if I have a browser open I don't notice a difference.

So when I ask the question, I want to know what other people do.

I've never really noticed a difference in doing what they say or not. If I have time I do as they say but if in a hurry usually its fine to keep things running.

I keep things running no matter what, I have better things to do than watch a percentage bar slowly rise..

So running programs in the background during installation will not corrupt data or cause problems or subtle changes to compromise the programs or integrity of the registry?

Additionally, is it that important to reboot immediately or install a bunch of programs consecutively? (I do the latter and have always done that).

If nothing else I temporarily disable my anitvirus software as I have had it interfere with software installs on occasion. Better safe than sorry. I mean, they must recommend shutting down other runing programs for a reason.

thanks for the explanation... well in my case, if in the process of the installation the software advise me to close all open applications, then i will close them. it's better to follow the instructions than to repeat the installation again! anyway, I'm not that type of person who hates to wait. :D

    Code:
    ./configure
    make
    su -c 'make install'
I always have other apps running... benefit of a real OS I guess.

I wanted to update you guys on one pitfall, if the installer says for you to restart. You'd better (in lieu of trying to install additional programs). Thank goodness for the "restore function" which allowed me to revert before the installation rampage. A critical program that I used was somehow installed incorrectly with Spybot Tea timer running in real time; this prevented Windows from finding the correct drivers for the program to run - I ended having to reformat my OS and reinstall everything.

In the end everything worked out and my computer is running well. I found that back up my programs to a virtual CD helped facilitate reinstalling everything without having to insert every single disk for 30 programs.

Maybe I should have used some hard disk image backup which may have run smoother and faster.

I am a sucker for percentage bars...

I guess it depends on the programs. Some programs you just know you'll have to restart or you'll screw things up. But for things like Palm handheld device software, browsers, utilities, and media players I'll usually install 2 or 3 programs before rebooting. I just really hate waiting for a reboot (however short it may be). For some reason those progress bars fascinate me...except when they stop for no apparent reason and ruin your day.

I don't understand the point of closing all open windows before installing. Many programs may still be running in the background and tehy may use up a lot of memory. Anti-Virus programs for example.

If I'm doing something and then I install something w/ that other window open then the istaller says to reboot, I usually just click 'reboot later' b/c I don't want to close out of my windows. Sometimes I will click reboot later and install something else and I don't notice any difference. I never close any open programs just to install something, unless I have nothing better to do.

Depends what I'm installing really, I would normally close the programs that are constantly updating or chewing ram, eg. Firefox or Winamp. I leave Windows Explorer open and folders. Is there that much of a need to close most/every running program in the background to install something?
