Symantec antivirus can't seem to kill it. It says access denied, and comes back every time I reboot. Also, it has downloaded malwareremover2008, a fake malware removal tool and that is also hard to eliminate. If this isn't the proper forum, does anybody know where a good forum is for this sort of thing? Thanks.

Download HijackThis, make a log and use that log to find out where it's hiding.
When you've found its location, boot in safe mode and remove it manually.

    - OR -

Install Hitman PRO, boot in safe mode and run it.

There's no need to format, only if your system is really f*cked up, i.e. boot problems etc, then i'd say it would be useful...

Let me know whether it worked for you or not

The source of your problem is Trojan.Blusod.

Seeing as you already have Symantec installed, here's their link.

first thing i would try...disable system restore...do a virus scan in safe mode (while booting press F8 key choose safe mode)...nasties like to hide in the system restore files...if that doesn't get rid of it...track its path down in regedit...deny permission to run...

If u know the location of the file that symantec cannot delete you can use Unlocker to delete it. Find the file, right click on it select Unlocker--->choose "Delete" and "Unlock All".

For the malware program that it downloaded, try uninstalling it from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. OR Just do a System Restore.

Either way...situations like these...I know it might look like the easy way out, but i'll do a reformat because even when u think you've cleaned it up properly and that it's gone..couple days later...malware again. So I say reinstall the OS and use a proper Antivirus/Firewall program like Panda Antivirus/Firewall OR Kaspersky w/ Comodo.

System restore was disabled by the trojan, and the only restore date is immediately after the trojan hit.

Ericyp, if your current security programs can't solve the situation and you are certain that at least one program has been installed by the malware, then maybe you have lost more control over your notebook than you know at the moment.
I'd advise you to backup important files onto removable media and completely sweep your HD with either Active@KillDisk or DBAN.
    Then reinstall your Windows OS.
It will take a couple of hours but then you can be certain you actually have a clean notebook and don't have a zombie or spambot that might be used for god knows what.
Check your backup files thoroughly with Kaspersky and/or Avira (online) virus scanners before putting them back of course.
It's a tedious job but it will give you most ease of mind.
    Cheers.

    Check out these links 01, 02, 03, 04, 05....
Read them carefully, some may have spyware themselves.. :D

As a last resort, download KIS 2007, activate it with a trial key (you will get full functionality), and run a full system scan at maximum protection..!!
Also try AD-Aware 2007 Personal and run a scan with it too....
