Instead of clicking Start - Turn Off - Standby, can I get a shortcut onto the desktop instead?

I found this on google, works for XP but don't know if there's any difference in vista.

You go to your desktop, right click and new shortcut, then for the location type in one of the below commands (in your case, %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState )

    Shutdown: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s
    Reboot: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -r
    Logoff: %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -l
    Standby: %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState
    Hibernate: %windir%\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Hibernate

hello, just want to be clear, it seems that standby mode is also sleep mode in vista. by default, when you press the power button of your pc it will go to sleep mode. if you want to customize the power control, right click on desktop then choose personalise and select screensaver and then change power setting and then go to left tab and click "choose what the power button do". alternatively you can use sidebar gadget and install shutdown gadget. hope this helps

In XP, control panel, power options, advanced, when you hit the power button drop down menu, stand by is an option.

It also has a menu for sleep button. Where's the sleep button? Can the Media Direct button be used as the sleep button?

In Vista you can set the power button or closing the lid (or both).
