I am running Vista on a NP5793 with 4gbs of ram, but I am unable to keep my memory usage much below 40% during idle, with 60% usage being common. The main culprit seems to be svchost.exe, one of which utilizes 1.5gbs all by itself. [IMG]
    Any help would appreciated.

Right click on that instance of svchost.exe and a popup menu will let you go to a list of services associated with that instance.

Are you new to Vista? It uses memory much differently from XP. It takes the approach that unused memory is wasted memory and will cache a lot of things in memory, but ready to page them out as needed. Therefore the numbers you are seeing are not out of line with the norms on Vista.

You're saying a memory intensive app would run fine, as the memory usage would be moved to the page file? That particular svchost controls superfetch and readyboost, as well as some others. I guess I assumed it wouldn't be utilizing over 2gbs during idle. Thanks for the help.

That is PRECISELY what I am saying. In some cases Vista may even just discard the memory contents if it realizes that it doesn't need to page the item out. (Like in the case of a code segment that contains no user written data and can be easily recovered without using the pagefile.)
