So yesterday I used the disk cleaning utility. There was a "Hibernation log- 4.8GB", I thought it was the log of every hibernations I did so I deleted it. Since then, I can't put the laptop in hibernation anymore...

    Anyone knows what iti s?

Yes there is a specific item that, when checked, deletes your hibernation file and shuts down system hibernation abilities.

You found it. I know of no way to repair it.

Have you tried disabling and re-enabling hibernation through the power options?

try disable the hibernation then enable it again
powercfg.exe /hibernate off, type this in the start search box and press enter to disable hibernation.
then, powercfg.exe /hibernate on, type this again to re-enable it.

just start the CMD and do this.
    1. Type powercfg /hibernate on and press Enter on your keyboard.
    2. Close the Command Prompt window.
    3. Reboot your PC.

WTH!! Ban the guy who said this:
    If u didn't know u shouldnt give misleading information..It can be repaired/enabled.

Type this in Run: powercfg -h on

Done! ..Enabling Hibernation on Vista so far is non-GUI so most users get confused..

Thats why i say ' The User is the Core Culprit of a problematic OS'

All he said was that he didn't know of a way to fix it, not that there wasn't a way to fix it. We need to keep flamenko around for a while so I don't think a ban would be appropriate :D

All he wanted to point out is that you shouldn't delete that file. Hybrid sleep is what needs to be activated (even in the power management settings) to allow going into hibernation.

    Wow....

So has he got it working again yet? My response was based on many earlier threads here where, once the file was deleted, there appeared to be a great amount of effort to re-enable hibernation.

And the subsequent poster was right, I never said there wasn't a way, only that I never knew of one.

So...IF he gets it working by any of the methods suggested, I will have learned yet another trick which is why we all come here to NBR.

Please advise as to the success here.

That doesn't matter. It's trick thing this hibernation in Vista. You can enable it back with the help of the command prompt, but it should of been a GUI setting.

Calm down my friend. It's ok for someone to not know something that you do.

Happens all the time. This forum is for teach and learning. He was only putting his insight into the matter.

    Can't you just go into Windows Power management option in Control Panel, disable then re-enable Hibernation, and it will recreate that file? oO;

No need for third party program really...

Nope, you have to use the command prompt trick mentioned earlier.

why is that? I am just curious, because I usually disable hibernation so I can save about 2 gb of space, windows will delete the file itself, and re-enabling it allow windows to create it again so I can use it when I need to.

Yeah? I'm not aware of any requirements that you must be omniscient to get 17 rep. Perhaps I missed something?

If that is a requirement, I think we'd better get negative rep's re-enabled, so some of us can get back down to where we belong :p

I tried to delete the hibernation file just now,
all hibernation options, including hibernation option in the power plans are gone.
I have to use "powercfg.exe /hibernate on" to turn hibernate back on.
May be its just a bug....

Not sure why it is. But there is a MS Knowledgebase article that says if you use disk cleanup to remove the hibernation file you need to go through the command prompt thing to get it re-enabled.

Maybe it's another way users can squeeze extra GBs out of their HDDs for their own use.

    Who knows?

I got it working again with WinBubble.

It takes 5GB of the Vista partition. What the hell?

I don't see the metaphor. Even if you were referring to this:

you're wrong. This is not a metaphor. You're not comparing "the User" to a/the "Core Culprit", you're assigning "the User" the status of "Core Culprit" in this sentence.

    Anyways, that was OT.

I believe that is normal. Hibernation usually takes up a few GB in Vista, which is why many people disable it.

The hibernation file stores the contents of your RAM to your HD. Thus, it should be about the size of your RAM. i.e. mine is 1.99GB according to Disk Cleanup.

Never used it... For those with low write speeds, this can be horrendous as many had related with the Sandisk SSD. A trade off is tuning up your system with a Clean Install and complete manicure/pedicure from the tweaking thread (below). Most have reported significant start-up times averaging in the 30-40 second area. Myself, I use sleep and rely on my quick start/shutdown times.

Yeah, I don't use hibernation very often. It's helpful, don't get me wrong, but I don't move too much to need it. Mainly the size of my laptop is why I don't take my laptop to many places.
