Whenever I try to hibernate or sleep my windows 7 machine, the screen fades to blackness, but the lights, fan, etc. are still on. So I wait for five minutes thinking that it needs time to hibernate, but it's still stuck in the same situation making me have to force restart the system. I know that my hibernate is enabled, so that's not the problem. Maybe it's a certain program that's preventing my computer from sleeping. This is really important. Any advice would be helpful! thanks!

You can see if there is anything in the event log.
Search for Event Viewer and open it. Then go to windows logs. There might be something helpful in the system or application log.

If you cant find anything try clearing the logs in the event viewer by right clicking on the left hand menu. Then reproduce the issue and check the event viewer again after.

A possible quick fix is to use the Disk Cleanup utility to delete the existing hiber.sys file where your data is stored during hibernation. Then try hibernating again.
