I have a logo along with my contact info and address that I occassionally need to add to the header and footer of an existing Word Doc.

I cant seem to figure out the easiet way to do this in '07.

How can I SAVE a preset template somewhere in Word so that its easy to access and can be used as an overlay on top of an existing word document (like a resume for example)?

Id like to add it to blank/new word docs as well...

    Thanks.

    You can try this:

    • Click "Header", then "Edit Header", this then shows you a perforated line of where the header is.
    • Type in whatever you want your header to be, or insert your jpeg or whatever it is,
    • Then select everything in the header (text logo etc)
    • While everything is selected (highlighted), click the "Header" button, it should be on the right now if youre in "design view".
    • On the bottom you should see "save selection to header gallery".
    • Click that, save it as you like, close your header, open a new document, and try it out.

Lol oh pft, much easier way:

    • Open a blank document.
    • Click Headers, then click "edit header".
    • Insert whatever you want your header to be, close header editor.
    • Now just click the "Office" button (top right) and scroll over "save as"
    • Save it as a "Word Template" in the default folder (the folder it opens to)

Now when you want to start a new document, just open Word, click the office button, click "New", on the right click "My templates..." and in there should be your template with your header and anything else you added!

Or you can use both methods just in case you want to later append your header to document, you can save it as a header like I described in my previous post.

Thanks much for the help-thats exactly what I needed. Couple of issues though:

    1) When the header is brought up after already being saved, its "grayed out". Can I prevent that from happening?
    2) Is there any easier way of accessing the "header gallery" than scrolling down the full lists of headers that they have pre-stored?
    3) Any way to save a header with a footer together?
    4) Finally, why cant I save a specific margin setting in the header? I try moving my logo to the top of the page to save space, but it wont react to the new margin setting within "header".

    Thanks for the help.

    1) Well its greyed out to tell you its a header, when it prints it should look normal.

2)Not sure what you mean, you mean when you save your own thing if you can make it appear at the top of the list?

You can try saving it under "built in". (When you click save as header gallery a box appears, in the drop down list for "Category" select Built-In) Then name it something that starts with the letter 'a', it should appear as the 3rd result after this. There might be a more normal way, if I find it ill post here.

3)I think if you wanna save a header and footer you have to save it as a template, otherwise I think you'd have to save the header and footer individually.

4)Maybe try adjusting the margins of the page itself before applying header? Its under page layout.

Or before saving your header, change the setting in the Design tab on the left, "Header From Top" to .1 or .0 inches, then save it to gallery..

    1) To your first point-I need it to be seen not-grayed-out as most of my clients open the attachments I send them and do not print them out. Any way to have it not show up gray?

As for the margin thing-still doesnt work. Have no idea why it wont accept a custom margin.

Otherwise, ill try everything else you suggested and see if it works.

    Thanks again for the info...

No problem, I dont see an option anywhere to "un grey it", ill tinker with it a bit more when I have a chance.

I dont see why the margin isnt working, maybe try editing it with the data selected (highlighted) and then without it selected, alernatively if your on a slow machine Word might not be auto updating, try hitting F9 (this is a total guess though lol, I dont even know if its the right key) to update everything.

The header margin needs to be edited via the header design tab, not page layout tab (apparently), make sure you're editing it from there, the "Header From Top" field, and dont type the numbers, use the arrows.
