BSOD visited my computer two days ago. so what I did is I tried to overwrite the OS, but I was surprised to see my hard drive having 270GB/270GB (I have 320GB, but had two other partitions; one for XP, and the other for spare). so the first thing that came to my mind was that the HDD was reformatted. I tried XP on dual boot, but it won't boot up.

so I finally decided to install Vista on the reformatted hard drive (I don't now what reformatted it). I tried a couple of file recovery softwares, but no luck. I was so frustrated that I went to the net without any antivirus. when all seemed lost, I reformatted again and installed Vista once more, this time with antivirus and with no hopes for recovery.

now, I've seen solutions, but I still doubt it. after reformatting twice and having the OS installed twice also, I don't think I can still recover it. or can I?

there's another way, I think. there is this other PC where I stored some of the pictures. but it was MOVED (ctrl+x) to a flash drive, then to my laptop. I don't know if I can recover the files I moved.

any help would be appreciated. i lost lots of pictures, and those are even the ones when we left Philippine airport to our vacation here in the US. please help. thanks.

Wait. So you had another partition for XP? Do you now have ~320GB free, having formatted? Where were the files you wish to recover?

First thing I recommend is not to do anything more with the hard drive. Take out the HD and get an external enclosure. Connect to another computer.. desktop or laptop and extract what you need.. images and documents. After you got all you needed then reinstall the HD back and install Vista using the whole partition. If you want to dual boot with XP you can re-partition within Vista and go on from there. You need a BCD program to dual booth. You can Google to see how it's done such as 'dual booting Vista and XP' or 'XP and Vista'. Kumusta ang Pinas?

Did you try using WinHex, Recover My Files, EnCase or EasyRecovery?

If those don't work and you are willing to pay big to have your data back, go to recovery professionals or something like that.

i would do what kanehi said, and boot it in external enclossure.. i dont think winhex will work since he kinda screwed up the boot.ini with a fraged xp ontop of a vista partition for dual booting

I already formatted the disk twice. and reinstalled Vista twice, too.
I don't think I'll be able to recover it from the laptop.

two days ago, I had 3 partitions, C:\ for Vista, D:\ for XP, and E:\ for backup purposes.

the pictures were saved in Vista, under Users, <username>, My Pictures, US Trip. after the two installations of OS, I have not written anything on that folder (My pictures).

I don't know I f I can still recover it. I tried a lot of softwares, but no luck. the files were not there.

    SECOND SOLUTION:

I copied the files to another computer. I copied them directly from the camera to that computer, but then, when I bought my laptop, I moved the files from the computer to the laptop via flash drive. the flash drive now is not working, so let's not use it.

is there any way I can retrieve the moved files from the computer? I have not overwritten it with the same file, so maybe it's still there?

    @kanehi

I already did a dual-boot. the problem is that when Vista won't boot up, XP won't boot up, too. so I just reinstalled the whole Vista, but I was surprised because it was already formatted (270GB/270GB on the partition screen during Vista installation).

Yeah, you could try recovery software such as Recuva on the computer you had the pics on before. :)

tried recuva, but the files were not there.

these files were MOVED, not deleted. I used ctrl+x on these pictures and transferred them through my flash drive to the laptop.
