I downloaded a program that has a good probability it wasn't exactly safe. I installed it, and it asked to restart my computer like a normal program would. So i restart my computer and when I logged on it says " system will shut down in 60 seconds due to C:/windows/system32/lsass.exe"

i read on some forums that this is probably a virus

any way to fix it without reformating?

could i copy the file from a different computer (windows home vs windows media center on my lappy) and put it on a cd to put it on my laptop in the same directorty? any suggestions? Please ASAP

"Open the file "\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" in Notepad. (Press the Start button, click onRun, type Notepad \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, and press OK.) Normally, it will have one entry for something called "localhost". If in addition you see a list of Anti-Virus sites such as Symantec, McAfee and more, then the worm has struck."

i did this and it seems as if the virus hasnt affected this. im still thinking maybe a fluke of windows?

    Google for stinger.exe
It's a standalone virus scanner which specializes in removal of certain trojans, worms, etc. Run it in safemode and you'll be good.

Also, when you get the countdown dialog, do the following
    Start > Run > shutdown -a

lsass.exe sounds like Install Shield's update program. I ran into that on many Dells. Not a virus in my books, but virus you have maybe using that name.
