My goal was to create a separate partition on my hard-drive and subsequently install the Windows 7 Beta operating system on this partition. When I go to the drive management for vista, and try to 'shrink' my c drive, vista tells me I have 0 MB available for shrinking. In other words -- I don't have the option to create a partition! :confused2:

The only hint it gives is that I should disable snapshots or pagefiles on my system, and I don't even know what these are! I do have Diskeeper 2008, could this be causing the problems? Anyone know how I disable snapshots and pagefiles?

In short - how can I shrink my partition because I have plenty of space available but vista says I have 0 MB available for shrinking. Any help would be appreciate.

    Thanks--

I've heard you have to use a 3rd party software.

To disable snapshots > Right click "computer" > properties> system protection> uncheck the drive> apply > ok

To disable page file > Right click "computer" > properties> advanced settings > advanced tab > uncheck auto manage > select "no paging file" > set > ok

    and restart.

I don't think either of those will help... I don't think Vista's built-in partition tool will shrink your main system volume. I think you need a third-party tool like gparted. You can run it from the Ubuntu install disc, or from a gparted livecd.

It is said that resize function is available on Vista. You need to enter the amount you want to shrink the hard drisk volume by,not the new volume you are trying to create. Seems that it is not convenient to handle. What's worse is that you might lose your valued data during the shrinking process. Here's something for your reference: How to Resize Vista Partition?

A very limited resize function, that is.
Here's another guide to shrink Vista without need to buy software or to repair the MBR.
