The Notebook Review forums were hosted by TechTarget, who shut down them down on January 31, 2022. This static read-only archive was pulled by NBR forum users between January 20 and January 31, 2022, in an effort to make sure that the valuable technical information that had been posted on the forums is preserved. For current discussions, many NBR forum users moved over to NotebookTalk.net after the shutdown.

    Has Google abandoned the standalone Google Talk application for Windows?

    it seems like they constantly improve the built in app on gmail, while the actual program has stagnated for years

    what are they up to?

    Yes, I noticed that too -- I still use Google Talk rather regularly. I think it's become obvious that Google is favoring the integrated Gmail+Talk scheme nowadays.

    I do hope that Google does something about the standalone Talk application though. But it just doesn't seem like anything is going to happen at this point.

    The standalone app runs counter to their "everything inside a browser" philosophy. In Google's world, the OS UI runs within a browser, so the last thing they want is a desktop windowing system (like Windows) running Google applications like GTalk.

    It's too bad because I rely on the desktop GTalk a great deal and like it much more than the browser version.
