My USB 2.0 500 gb hard drive will suddenly go offline for no reason, and to get it back I keep having to go into disk management and reactivate it.

I am running XP, but I was running Vista as recently as a week ago and never had this problem

I am starting to get irritated because I will have torrents downloading to that drive overnight and the hd will go offline and stop the download.

    Any ideas?

Your external drive could possibly be failing. What kind of HD do you have? SeaGate?

Offline? You mean it just turns off?

The hard drive itself will still be on but it wont show up in my computer, I keep having to go to disk management and click re-activate disk.

The HD is still getting power and everything but for some reason it just disappears from my computer. But under disk management the computer still sees the HD.

Go to the HDD Manufacturer's site, and download - run a diagnostic tool.
