Can anyone recommend a preferably free or low cost reliable hard drive data recovery software? I use Windows 7 but also have dual boot to XP, so if there's some reliable legacy software, I'm fine with that too.

My sister dropped her external drive, not sure what kind it is or extent of failure because I haven't seen it yet, and it may even be a physical failure. But I said I'd try to do what I could first before she sends it off for a hard recovery.

But I haven't had to deal with this for quite some time (thankfully), so just wondering what I might be able to try.

Please, no lectures on data backup, I've preached that to my family and friends for years already, obviously with little success.

    Thanks.
