    I've ordered my new HP laptop and Dell PC in the past couple days, and I have some questions for when they arrive...

    Do either of these companies put a lot of junk software on the computers with the OS and/or brand a lot of the programs?

    Should I do a clean install of XP when I get them, or is that overkill?

    Thanks.

    I did not see much of a difference in performance after formatting the hard drive. You can easily uninstall most of what dell puts on the computers. It is also easy to overlook important drivers after formatting. Mmy inspiron 8600 took a gigantic performance hit when I did not reinstall the dell chipset drivers.

    GPU cooling (100°C->75°C)* Inspiron 8600 * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo (337/242 -> 400/300) * 2x256 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * Aquamark 3: 24058 * 3DMark'03: 3404 * 3DMark'01 SE: 13120

    ya, i dont think they put enough junk on there that its worth a re-install. Anything u dont really want can just be deleted, without the risk of loosing those drivers.

    You could buy a disk space management utiltiy like diskkeeper (similar to windows defragmentation utility), which was recommended to me by someone on this site. I didnt get it, but you may want to.

    Disk management software usually becomes just more junk on your hard drive. Plus, some of the included software can come in handy on those rare occasions. Just defrag and keep your hard drive clean and defrag at least once a week to keep things running smoothly.
