    Hi there guys,

I have a problem. Recently, I got 3ds Max 9 so that I could start learning how to do some CG stuff. But, I have Vista Home Premium (32bit) and the program would not run. I found some other forums online stating that 3ds Max 9 was incompatible with Vista (something to do with DirectX10), but that some people were able to get it up and running.

I have tried several things so far (running it as administrator, setting the compatibility mode, and disabling destop composition), and none of these things work. The program would load fine, but when it gets to the welcome window, it would crash. I feel that it's the welcome window's fault because it is only when the window load does it crash. Anyways, if anyone here got 3ds Max 9 to work on Vista, please help. Thx.

I've got it running on XP only at the moment, but if you can't find a solution, I'll install it on Vista and see if I have any problems.

Have you tried running the program in compatibility mode?

Ok, I installed 3ds max 9 on my vista partition and it won't work either. I tried the fixes that a google search turned up to no avail. However, Autodesk is planning an update for 3ds max 9 tomorrow that will allow it to run in DX10 mode.

Supposedly though, it works if you check the box for don't run desktop composition, check the box for run as admin, and put compatibility mode for XP. I couldn't get that working because the option to run as admin was grayed out for me for some reason. I could right-click the icon, then select run as admin, but that didn't work...

I already tried all that was suggested...compatibility, administrator and all that. Still, no avail. But, if they are about to release a patch tomorrow, then that would be great. Thax alot for what u did man, much appreciated.

Software Companies (especially as big as autodesk) should have a responsibility to make sure that their software works with new OS...

    Anyways thanks...

    Hey no problem...

What I've discovered about Vista is that it's always the really expensive software that doesn't work with it... All my basic, free apps work fine in it. But then 3ds max doesn't, I have yet to try installing autocad or Inventor to it, but I wouldn't be surprised if those don't work either.. I just ordered my grandmother a Dell E1505 so she could load her stitching program on it for her sewing classes, and that $2000 piece of software doesn't work either on it...
