All right guys, I've figured out how to add HP Laserjet 1010 / 1012 / 1015 Printer to Windows 8. Although, it is ridiculous I'm the one who have to provide support for HP printers instead HP, however I'll be happy to explain and help you guys;
1. Download the HP LaserJet 1010/1012/1015 Host Based (Windows Vista) driver from here,
2. Extract the driver into a folder and remember the place of it,
3. Follow the pictures;
4. Enjoy and keep use longer your Printer

Ah, a good ol' manual install! Great guide and very good visuals, Atom Ant. Thanks!
(Does the software utility really not work under Windows 8 yet? What a pain.) -
Also, when it comes to HP computers, I'd do it like this any time of the day. Every HP printer I ever got had so much bloatware in the installer package that it wasn't even funny anymore. -
Thank you for your instructions. However, I am trying to connect my Windows 8 laptop to my HP LaserJet 1012 that is connected directly to a desktop running Windows Vista, where the printer is enabled to be shared. I am unable to print to the LaserJet 1012 even though I can connect to it via the home network. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there, randcal44, and welcome to the forums. Would you mind elaborating? What happens (if anything) when you attempt to print?

Hi, I have spent hours in frustration now trying to make my hp laserjet 1010 work on my Windows 8. I did all the steps in this guide, but when I get to point 10. trying to install the driver, I get the error that the printer can not be installed RPC failed. In my language (norwegian)
"kan ikke installere skriver
Det eksterne prosedyreskallet (RPC) Mislyktes" Wich roughtly translates to "Can not install printer, the exsternal procedure shell (RPC) failed.
I am Running Windows 8 32-bit my printer is connected via usb to my computer.
Please Help:/ -
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
A perfectly good printer is back in action.
Again, thank you.

Thanks for this Atom Ant, but it is not working for me. I am trying to install a HP LJ1010 on my new Windows 8 laptop and am ok until I get to Step 7 when hpc1010w doesn't show up in the window. This is despite browsing to the folder where I have the decompressed hpc1010 files. I have hpc1010e, hpc1010h.gpd, hpc10120h, hpc1010w and hpc1015w files in the folder. Properties for the hpc1010w file show it is an ini file whereas the window is looking for an inf file. I have tried changing the name of the hpc1010w.ini file to hpc1010w.inf but that doesn't work. Any ideas please?
-
hpc1015w have to show up in step 7, which will if you downloaded the linked driver. Then in step 9 you have to select between the 3 printer; 1010 HB / 1012 HB / 1015 HB. Obviously you have to choose the 1010 HB.

Thanks for the further info, Atom Ant, all is now ok. I really appreciate your help.

Hi,
I've the laserjet 1010 Hp printer. Now I've e pc portale with windows 8. I would use my printer with this pc. In particular I've 3 pc. One of these has Windows Xp and i've installed my printer on this pc. Then I made a wlan with another pc in wich there is windows vista and i use this printer. In fact on the first pc I've shared my printer so I see this printer with the pc with windows vista ad i install it. Now I want doing the same with a new pc with windows 8. I would use your help but you connect the printer directly to the pc. As I explained before I would that my printer was connected to PC with windows Xp.
Can you help me?
For completeness I've connected the printer with pc with windows 8 and in this case the printer go. But I can't solve the problem that I want to connect directly the printer to the pc with windows Xp because I've a LAN in wich some PC uses this printer (as the pc with windows vista) and also because the pc with windows Xp is alway on.
Thank you very much (and sorry for my english)
Bye bye -
I suggest you do what I did and follow Atom Ant's instructions at the beginning of this thread. That is what I did and I am not a computer wizard. If I can do it then any one can
Good luck -
Your problem is more complicated with wirelessly connecting to a Windows XP PC to use the printer (if I understand correctly), so I'm unsure of the solution. There is sure some short of trick to solve this case and maybe Prostar Computer could give you further ideas or tijo who use it as a network printer. See the previous posts and find them.

unbelievable - it works!
in local HP consumer service they said that no chance to work with Laserjet 1010 on Win2008, as they didn't develop suitable drivers. Still when followed the instructions described here, my Laserjer 1010 started to work! -
I signed in just to tell you - THANKS!
It worked like a charm!
And I was started to get desparate, thinking I'll have to buy a new printer, switch to an older version of windows or just not print for now. I can't believe they make us buy new printers, I don't have a nice words for them so I'll skip that thoughts..
Thanks again, the instructions are detailed and easy. I just cannot thank you enough. It's so nice to know people like you exist! -
at the first step, when I click the link to download the driver, it only shows me vista driver no windows 8? what to do?
-
-
for the LaserJet 1015 there are windows 8 drivers etc
HP LaserJet 1015 Printer - Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center
HP Color LaserJet CM1015/CM1017 Multifunction Printer series - Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center -
Could you please help me? I cannot find port DOT4_001. Look at the image below.
Any ideas? -
Quantum Entanglement:
Than try to use the Virtual printer port for USB. Hope that will help, if not uninstall everything and start it over. Which Printer model do you have? -

I've just joined today as I have the same problem Atom Ant - so after extensive and brain aching googling, I found this info and extracted it. Guess what it worked.
Try it and see what happens.
AA thanks for your help anyways mate.
"Hi there,
Fresh install of windows 8 Beta 64 bit on my PC and every part works quite well but...
Is there a widows 8 driver for HP laser-jet 1012 printer?
Any help in this would be highly appreciated.
I got my old HP 1012 to print using Win 8. Here's the story:
I've just upgraded a Thinkpad X230T from Win 7 to Win 8. The last hurdle was the HP Laserjet 1012 printer which worked normally under Win7 using the Universal Print Driver and DOT4_001 port. After upgrading to Win 8 the printer wouldn't print.
I removed any old 1012 devices showing in Device Manager
Then I plugged in the 1012 to a USB port and turned it on
Then I opened 'View devices and printers' in Control Panel
Then clicked on Add a Printer
Then in the next window I clicked on 'The printer that I want isn't listed'
I then selected the 'Add a local printer...' option and clicked next
Then I selected the 'Use an Existing port' and selected the USB001 (Virtual printer port for USB) and clicked Next
In the list of printers I selected HP and Laserjet 3055 PCL5 and slected Next (as this driver works in Win 7)
Then in the next window I selected Next without changing the printer name and the driver was installed.
In the next window I selected to not the share the printer
In the next window I selected 'Print a test page' and nothing happened. So I thought that's it.
I happened to plug in a USB HDD to look at some files and then removed it. The test page (which was waiting in the print queue) printed OK!
I couldn't believe it.
I could now print anything. I turned the printer off/on. Rebooted the Thinkpad and the old 1012 just prints normally.
Hope this works for all HP 1012 users" -

I'm not sure if anyone is still following this thread but I recently ran into this issue and i'm having a few problems following Atom Ant's guidelines. In Step 1, the link to download the driver doesn't provide a driver to download (maybe the path got moved). I did find the driver on the HP site for Windows 8 (64-bit) but it's an .exe file, so when I get to Step 7 the file doesn't show up in the Locate File window. Does anyone have a link to the proper driver? Thank you very much.

The LaserJet 1012 is not listed in the HP Trad-In Program for 2013. I would then have to trash a printer that is still working as a charm.
Many thanks Atom Ant for this solution! It worked fine for me. :thumbsup:Atom Ant likes this. -
Thanks so much! My HP LaserJet 1010 works fine now, running under Windows 8.1. Your post is a masterpiece of clarity and helpfulness. HP Support should read and learn from you.

To Atom Ant: THANK YOU!
I am so happy that I don't have to go out and buy a new printer! Even though HP currently provides a Windows 8.1 (64-bit) driver for the 1012 here, it did nothing to help me because I have been using a USB print server to share the 1012 with a Mac and a PC. The aforementioned driver only works if you're connecting the printer directly to a USB port. I had just clean-installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my wife's Dell and spent several hours trying all different ways to get a driver to work with my print server and the 1012. It wasn't until I found Atom Ant's posting that I realized that the Vista driver was the way to pull this off. It worked like a charm. I recently updated my 2010 MacBook Pro to OS X Mavericks and had no trouble getting the LJ 1012 to work by selecting "Generic PCL Laser Printer." I love this little printer and really did not want to see it go.Atom Ant likes this. -
Thanks you too for the good words and linking the page with new drivers! I'm looking forward to test this new Win 8.1 driver, whenever I'll be at home.

Hi,
I have an HP LaserJet 1010 and a new processor with Windows 8. Have found this fix and all is fine up to step 6. However when I select the folder extracted to disk and try and open it I get a message saying "Folder specified does not contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64 based systems" Also the file shown on Atom's screenshots where is says hpc1015w mine says hpcw1015e. What am I doing wrong? -
i was really shocked !!!
thanks for your help -
I did the steps and had to select the USB Port because there was no DOT4_001, when i tried to print a test page and it just spat out a blank page, It's got a new toner in it. I also tried printing different documents with it but it always spits out blank pages quickly. has anyone else had this issue or is there a fix?
-
AA - I followed your directions to the end, but although it says I have successfully installed the HP 1012, both times when I try to print a test page it says there is a problem and it doesn't print. Also, when I try to remove the printer to start over, Win 8 Remove will not work -- it says I have trouble with the printer and apparently wants me to fix the trouble before I can remove it? Any suggestions? Thanks
-
Reinstall windows if you sure the printer is good, do not have better idea unfortunately.
-
Thank you so much for this information. I too have just bought a new PC with Windows 8.1 on and was not happy when I found out my HP 1010 wasn't supported. I followed your instructions and it worked - I don't need to buy a new printer after all.
Very many thanks!Atom Ant likes this. -
I'm very happy it is working out for many of you and I could provide real help . Hopefully the trick will work with Windows 9 and these good printers can stay alive for another 10 years...
-
Thanks, it works.
There are however two glitches:
1) Manual printing on both sides does not work;
2) If I select 'Printer Properties' from the print menu of Word 2013 the application dies.
Best regards

I have laserjet 1010; should I choose 1012 instead? -
Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but I wanted to try. I followed all instructions to install my HP LaserJet 1012 but have been unsuccessful. I get all the way to the end to the page that says Type a printer name, Printer name: hp LaserJet 1012 HB. When I click next I get the status bar showing the printer is installing but then get a pop up that says "Printer driver was not installed - The system can not find file specified". I'm stuck, where do I go from here?
Also, when I select the hp LaserJet 1015 HB from the install the printer driver page a caution note says "This driver is not digitally signed!". could this be the problem? -
Hi, the guide is working and worked for many people. Also this the only known way to make it work, so if it is not good for you, than problem is somewhere at your part; maybe cable, connection problem, printer is dead or windows problems and you have to start everything from the scratch.
