I installed Yahoo Dekstop since I believe they are using the same Konfibulator engine found on Mac OSX but is Google any interesting? I think their indexing engine is nice but am concern about installing another process churning away in the background.

Yahoo Desktop is based upon Konfibulator, and it can run on Windows and Mac OSX. The Mac OSX dashboard (native in 10.4) runs on it's own engine.

I like Yahoo desktop, but be aware that every widget you run loads as it's own process. This is good for stability, but could be bad for system performance if you have a older comp or limited RAM.

Google's indexing is pretty amazing at retrieving stuff including emails in Outlook that can't be found using Outlook's built in search functionality. I ran it for a while, but ultimately decided that since I wasn't using it, I should free up the process cycles. It's also worth while to note that the Google index creates a rather large index file on your hard drive (think GBs, not MBs).

Both are bloatware / spyware. Why use either?

I actually liked having the access to the weather and dictionary right there. I used a Firefox extension for both but those were very much bloated.
