Alright, I am pretty new at this linux stuff and I keep seeing different software made for the gnome environment, and some for the k__ environment. What are the differences between the two? I believe Ubuntu uses gnome, is this right? Can you use both types of software if you only have one? What are they exactly (just gui environments)?

They're both windows makers, or shell. Basically they control how your desktop/windows look or being arranged. Ubuntu has a version called Kubuntu which uses KDE as the base shell.

Both Gnome and KDE are popular, there are skins, and apps made specifically for each. I believe Gnome is more popular these days and easier to work with.

If you're new to Linux you probably wanna stick with Gnome. When you're more experienced you can always switch to another shell.

Thanks, I will stick with gnome then.

So I can only use software that goes with either gnome or kde, or both, I can not use gnome as my interface with kde programs. Right?
