    My current situation:

I have an installtion of windows XP I do not want to loose applications on.

It is being moved from a core2 system to a AMD APU system.

When it tries to load in RAID, AHCI or IDE mode the system BSOD and restarts.

I can enter safe mode in IDE mode but even with legacy support on my mouse and keyboard wont work.

Will a repair installation disturb my programs in any way? Or should I just wait to get a PS2 mouse from some place?

    I have a backup image.

Since you're moving between totally different CPU's you should use Sysprep.
IIRC, the flag /genrealize should be used, but you have to search for it because I haven't used it for years and can't remember the details.

Repair installation should not disturb your current installed apps

    cheers ...

Lol was for my wife, in the end I have convinced her to go windows 7, so no more headaches like this for me!

She is now running an AMD A8 3850, 8GB of ram on my old 500GB WD scorpio black.

I think your idea is flawed. been there more than a few times helping clients et al. If the systems were quite similar in architecture, I have pulled hard drive out of one, stuck it in the "new" and fired it up and it will boot, discover devices, and either install the generic driverware or the right one depending on the version of win and the hdwe. then go fetch the later chipset drivers and the other particulars. that kind of move will work pretty well after you cleanup registry errors.

however to move to a significantly different architecture and doing a repair install is going to result in a troubled system henceforth.
    you won't get optimal performance.
