Hi, I just got a new laptop with a blu-ray player but I can't seem to find any free software to play back blu-ray discs! Does anyone know a good one?

You mean to say that Asus did not include playback software? That sounds very... odd.

That's what I mean to say. At least I can't find any on my drivers/utilities disk nor on the ASUS support website...

It didn't come with WinDVD or anything? That's tacky!

Well... I think it might have come with something called Video Magic, but the first thing I did when I got the computer was a fresh install of Win7... I assumed all the software that came with my computer would be available on the website and/or the disc that came with my machine but this particular item doesn't seem to be..

IIRC there was there was also no blu-ray playback software included in the G73. Looks like this is SOP for ASUS.

Yeah Windows doesn't support Blu-Ray playback and what you're paying for is just the codec and there's no free/open source version available.

Yeah.. my brother said something about that to me; he has a G73. He told me he got something from the asus website though, which I couldn't find.

A sort of 'backdoor' to BD playback is to use MakeMKV to extract the playable portions. No menus though.

Yeah, generally it's best to back up, and download any programs, drivers etc you need before you reinstall Windows.

You may be able to get Blu-ray to play on WMP with Sharks codecs.

Ok I managed to acquire Asus's video magic software... and it doesn't recognize blu rays. Great.

edit - ok i see why, I got an outdated version... but the updated version isnt available on their website. Alright lemme try these codecs...

The lesson here is to make the recovery/backup CD's or DVD's when you first purchase a notebook. Acer includes an Application recovery disk so when I did a clean install and found a missing program I needed and it was not on the Acer site I managed to find it on the recovery app disk. Might never use those disks again but worth the price and time effort for this one program.
