SUPER is probably the best all-in-one freeware converter for pretty much every media format.

And its recent update finally makes it full multi-threaded... so the more cores your CPU has, the faster it is to convert stuff.

    Another vote for Super :)

    Its rather CPU heavy though.

The last time I looked at "Super" my eyes glazed over the user interface was so confusing. (I believe I am thinking of "Super".) Has that been cleaned up at all? There were so many options with no clue as to where to start, and the help file was of little help.

I don't think they cleaned it up...

I would't call it confusing - it is pretty clear laid out to me, but:
Unless you now your way around you do not know what the best settings are, i.e. you wonder "should you change the sample rate for audo or not" etc.

Well that is exactly what I was getting at. The "best settings" were not obvious at all. You have to really understand the different codecs, settings etc to make ANY senese of it at all. It would make more sense to have an interface that is simpler at the top level, but with all thes same functionality if you dig down into the settings. OR have some templates that set the parameters for various typical scenarios. OR documentation that spells out those parameters.

It is a great program written by AV techies for AV techies.

It should take almost no time to repackage a stream from one container to another. Only about as long as it takes to copy the file itself. The trick is whether or not you have to transcode the stream for your target device. Why do you want to change from an mp4 to avi? I have found very few good reasons for doing so. mp4 is a better container than avi in all respects.

So do you care to give a "non AV techie" a pointer or two on using SUPER? Or can you point me to some "typical settings" doc? I played with it once but was totally lost and uninstalled it. I am an audio geek, but am clueless when it comes to video and the packaging of the two.

I'd just take one from the drop down menu - and leave it.

Sometime increasing the resolution can help - generally leave it though.

    I'm no expert either.

Rats! Man, I was so counting on your to get me out of the weeds with SUPER. It looks like it does everything but eat. If you come across a good tutorial for it send it my way. OK?

    Thanks,
    Gary

That'll be something for me to look into actually :) Good idea :) Thanks for the suggestion - I only ever used it for flash videos - but a codec pack is easier - I suppose it could help me with some wave to MP3 files... or I look for the CDs again...

    Edit:
This isn't super specific - but should have inforation available...

Sweet! That is a nice looking set of guides. I didn't delve into them in detail. If you do find any SUPER specfic stuff send it along too.

    Thanks my friend!

If you're just changing the container, you might try AVI DeMux.
