    hi,
i want to format my computer but i have a few questions first.
    1. i bought my laptop on ebay, it was refurbished and it came with Windows Vista already installed and running, i was given no original cds but i made a backup cd. then i received a Windows 7 Upgrade Kit. is it safe to format with those cds?

    2. when i try to format, i right-click the C drive but the format button is grey and won't activate, why?

    thanks for your help.

    Hi,
Only one CD? That's not enough. Usually, a set of recovery discs consists of at least two DVDs.

I am not sure about that. I'd rather have bought a system builder version of Windows 7 - at least here this is cheaper than the Win7 upgrade.
Apart from that, I am not sure about the capabilities of this upgrade disc set you got.
Plain self-protection. Perfectly normal. Or would you like cutting the branch of a tree you are just sitting on? ;)

We have some threads about ISO images of Vista and Win7 that can legally be downloaded from MS servers. These allow a clean install, which is what you want.

reading between the lines, the OP doesn't likely own a legit license for wither Vista or Win7.

The copy of Windows 7 that Gateway sent you is for your Gateway laptop. Not for this new one.
